Does this affect your ability to GET credit? I mean in terms of the amounts of your student loans.

As it stands, I have no late payments, no collections, no judgments-nothing derogatory on my credit.

But Capitol One denied me for a credit card! So I am thinking that it has to do with my student loan debt load because I have A LOT as in over 100k. My mom made well into the six figures in college so I wasnt eligible for many grants and I was an RA in college which helped with housing. Since graduating I have since obtained 2 masters degrees (will complete in december 08) which increased the debt to over 100k.

Thoughts? And what credit card company can I apply to get a credit card? I have a CC through my credit union but Ive been with them for years so Im not sure if the personal relationship trumps the student loan debt load, lol.

Thoughts?

Suggestions?

My credit....

The house isnt on my credit....

I can get personal loan....Auto loan.....retail credit and the like.

Just not a credit card so Im really trying to understand this and would love to hear from folks with over $100k in student loan debt.

My plan is to take my first two year's of salary and put the whole thing towards it and knock it out in a year or two so Im not THAT concerned but I'd like to know how this works in terms of why cant I get a credit card outside of my credit union but I can get approved for a high auto loan, personal loans and retail credit.

Have you checked your credit scores? What is the utilization on your bank card?

You might have a low score because of your utilization on the card, and the length your loan accounts have been open without being paid down. This could be what is happening. My TU score is low because my gigantic loan isn't done yet, and my debt looks too high for TU for some reason. Eq/and Ex think it's great, go figure.

I had that much debt a few years ago and capital one was eager.. a never-ending mailbox full of their stuff. Ii got their card and they were a pain in the butt for many years.

Outstanding loans are calculated in your DTI (as far as I know), so yes, it can affect your ability to get a card.

You need to know your FICOs... that would be the first test.
