I just got accepted into the nursing program at my university and the cost is going to be around $40k for the whole program. I applied once for sallie mae (with my wife who has good credit) about 1.5 years ago and was approved for a small amount, but I later ended up canceling it because I didnt need it. At the time my wife didnt really have high utilization, now shes around maybe 60-65% (working on lowering it), do you think she will have any problem this go around?

I don't have a preference with getting a loan through them though if anyone has a better lender in mind. I was thinking about using NFCU, think that would be better?

Sorry, this isn't a direct answer (I'm a newbie), but I'm also very interested in any answers to your question. I took out a student loan of 40k 2 years ago and I just had to pick from a list of over a dozen lenders as I stood in front of a window at my school's financial aid office. I was in a hurry to get the loan processed to pay tuition, so I didn't have time to research. I just picked Sallie Mae, and now everyone is telling me how horrible they are. I don't know if that's true, although my payments do seem high (part of the reason I joined this forum is to find out what I can about my loan).

OP...make sure you exhaust all federal aid first. As a independant student, you get higher limits. Nursing programs also have have a lot of available scholarships and grant programs. Also since you are a male (at least I am assuming), there may be additional grants....I know my neighbor went to nursing school and he had tons of money being thrown at him because he was male and the fact that there at not enough male nurses. He made it thru his program with minimal loans, probably less than $6k total for a 4 year program.

Bottom line....consult your school. Talk to the nursing program about additional funding.

Ill definitely look more into the grants and scholarships. I am already planning to use all federal aid first but worst case scenario, I will fall short by around $20k (not including scholarships). Hopefully there are male nursing scholarships, I saw one by Johnson and Johnson but it was on pause atm.
