Here's another boo boo the IRS admitted to today. This article was on MSNBC.

updated 5:43 p.m. ET, Thurs., May. 15, 2008
WASHINGTON - Up to 350,000 households aren't getting the $300 per child owed them as part of their economic stimulus rebate payments, the Internal Revenue Service said Thursday.

The tax agency says taxpayer human error and computer glitches were responsible for the problem affecting a tiny percentage of the 130 million taxpayers expected to benefit from the refunds the government began sending out last month.

IRS spokesman Terry Lemons said the agency was confident it had identified all the people affected by the mistake. He said the IRS will send letters to those who missed out on the refund and that checks for the child credit will be mailed out in July. People need not contact the IRS or file additional paperwork, he said.

The rebates, the centerpiece of the government's $168 billion plan to revive the faltering economy, provide up to $600 for an individual and $1,200 for married couples, based on income levels. In addition, people are entitled to $300 for eligible children younger than 17.

He said the problem on the child payments was traced to taxpayers failing to check a box on their paper tax returns and to two computer software systems, less than 1 percent of those in use, that weren't capturing the information needed to trigger the payment.

The IRS has already refunded some $27 billion to about 30 million taxpayers. It expects to hit 130 million refunds by the end of June, with the last checks — except for those who requested extensions in filing their returns and a few other exceptions — going out in July.

My last 2 digits are 79, DD hit my checking account this morning, IRS site still shows error message!

I'm 87 and got my DD last night, $900, Married with 1 child.

General reason for only getting the minimum is that my tax liability is $0 generally each year since my wife stopped working to be a stay at home mom. At my income level, I am able to not only get the Child tax credit, but also qualify for the EIC. I claim exempt from Fed taxes on my payroll checks so the only payroll tax they take from me to the IRS is twice a year bonus checks. I paid roughly $500 in fed taxes in 2007 and ended up with a refund of almost $3500. How can one survive on this income - No mortgage! our house is 100% paid for.

I believe I got this figured out to a degree though - You can still qualify for the full amount if you get a refund, it all matters if you have an ending tax liability total. For people using Form 1040, I believe that Line 63 is the key line, if that number is 0 (as it is on mine), then you get $300 (or $600 Married filing jointly). If that number is up to $600, then you get $600 for single, dunno if that would get $1200 or $900 for the joint filers). $300 for each child added to the end.

It's just frustrating to no end. Obviously we're getting a check since no DD today. IMO, I don't think the IRS is going by any kind of schedule, and is just randomly getting these rebates out. SIL got hers today, and she got a RAL through Block, her number was in the last group of DD's.

I've most definately learned not to count my chickens before they hatch. DH thought we were getting the money this week, even though I told him I didn't think we would, and he bought a ton of crap he needed for work. Now we gotta pay for that out of this weeks pay, and still be behind on everything else. I told him to take the stuff back, but they already used it.

Enough whining from me....

Bank account stimulated today! DH is in the mid 90's.

I got my incentive this morning. Chase will be very happy to get it! smile.gif My last 2 digits are 95.

Just outta curiosity, has anyone here gotten the message that they're getting a check and actually received DD instead?

Hang in there Lisa, hopefully you get a nice surprise in the mailbox or bank account within the week, preferably today.

I don't want to be negative, I really don't....however, I don't understand the frustration some are showing with this rebate. This is a bonus check that no one should have counted on anyway. No one's life should be hanging on this check, but there is a lot of anger and frustration not only on this thread, but all over the internet. Can someone explain this to me? Not trolling, not looking for an argument...just trying to understand.

I was finally "stimulated" this morning.

Family of 5 (3 kids under 6) = $2100.00. I just love to wake up stimulated. biggrin.gif

Here's an email received from Turbo Tax... Hopes this helps with the inquiries...

Dear Valued Customer,

We want to provide you with the most up-to-date information about the tax rebate to which you may be entitled.

Recently, you may have received a letter from the IRS advising you when to expect your Economic Stimulus Payment (rebate). That IRS letter may have inadvertently left off some important information. Taxpayers who chose to have their tax preparation fees deducted from their federal tax refund will receive their tax rebate in the mail, not via direct deposit.

Our records show that you chose this payment option in TurboTax. As a result, the IRS has determined that you will receive your tax rebate in the mail. This may result in you receiving your rebate on a date later than expected.

This situation, while not unique to TurboTax, is understandably causing some concern and confusion. To help further clarify the situation, below is the most current IRS rebate payment processing schedule, as well as additional resources about the tax rebates.

I hope you find this information helpful. If you still have questions, the best source for the most up-to-date information is www.irs.gov (see the "Rebate Payment Questions" link).

Sincerely,

Bob Meighan

Vice President, TurboTax Customer Advocacy

That's what has me confused. The IRS says we have to wait til June or July; however, according to some on here, people whose numbers are in the 80's & 90's have already gotten paper checks dntknw.gif

I am totally regretting having the fee taken from our refund instead of just paying the stupid $30 by debit card. It's been a big hassle! mad.gif

last 2 are 41 and the site says we should have ours may 23rd. wasnt expecting it until late june so thats nice smile.gif
hawk_needs_help
I received a letter stating that I should get mine after May 16. The thing I don't understand is that I owe back taxes. I was under the impression that I would not be receiving my $600, but the letter makes me think otherwise. The $600 has not been credited towards my account with the IRS. Guess I will wait and see.
Lisa98
Hoping for some updates this lovely Monday morning!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

17 and no direct deposit for me. I also owed IRS a little bit of money.

Lisa my last 2 are 52. Was due to be mailed 5/16 got THEM today. That's right 2 checks for $750 a piece. I was due $1500, so it equalled up to the right amount but I don't know why I got 2
IheartLoopHoles
I am 04 and this is the first time I have not gotten the error message.

Says my payment will be "issued" on May 30th.

I am assuming when they use the term "issued" that it means DD? Seems others who have pasted the verbage from the IRS website say that payment will be "mailed", which = paper check.

Is this a correct assumption?
bosoxfan
I just got my letter about the DD that was supposed to happen on the 16th. It didn't.

I only get $600 though, $300 for me and $300 for dear daughter.

I checked under my ssn and my wife's, error message on both. my last two are 54, wife is in the 90's. Our daughter got hers today and she filed a month after we did. I paid upfront for filing, DD and we owed nothing. Hurry up wait I guess.

We were supposed to get it by May 9th according to the schedule, but I wonder if we are just getting a check and what spurred that on.

But i will note that in Northern IL i delivered a ton of the checks today, USPS. The most 1 day run yet.

So i think that this was the first mas mailing of the paper checks. Been delivering the DD notices for weeks.

We're 73 & 74, filed in JANUARY with the stupid TurboTax fee-deducted-from-refund option, no letter except the initial one they sent back in April, and still get the error message. Guess our check will be true to the June 27th schedule.
Lisa98
A big waaahooo to those who finally have some sort of inkling as to when their $$$ is coming. Hopefully the rest of us will know soon.

From the dates I have, it still seems as if they are just randomly processing and sending checks.
blueuab
My last two are 59 and still no money or letters.

No update for us..98.

Got stimulus check in the mail yesterday the irs mailed out on the 16th ... last digits 55 biggrin.gif

Man Im really confused now. As I mentioned in an early post I got a check from the government for $200 2 weeks ago. So I assumed they took out what they needed to take out and sent the remainder. Then today I went onto the IRS website to see if they finally updated their records to show what my original amount was so I can better understand where the money went and this is what I got:

QUOTE

Man Im so confused! And I still havent received a letter stating where the money was applied to sad.gif
Chad3304
Yay, I gotta letter in the mail yesterday saying to expect my check BY 5/23/08 so hopefully I will get it today or do they only come on fri's, sats' and mondays?
demejoe
There appears to be no structure to how the irs is handling this (surprise) I used Turbo Tax and had the fee deducted from my check. Whats weird is that I am seeing people in the midde ranges like 50-60 getting their checks when the schedule states something else. Oh well, I figure I will see mine at the end of next month, if it comes sooner great if not oh well.
Lisa98
I haven't gotten a letter yet either. I know others who have though. Today is only Tuesday though, so if a letter were mailed on Friday, I might not see it until tomorrow or thursday.
blueuab
Yea,my boss got his check mailed to him last Monday and he filed through H and R Block his last two digits were lower than mine. The site says I should be receiving it by June 20th. I will wait till then and see what happens.
Lisa98
Any Hump Day updates? Either that you know your check is coming or you already got it in the mail.

Nothing yet for me, that's what we get for being on the tail end. They've probably logged all my calls where I complained and decided they'd process our check last. LOL
cjterry10
Well, mine was supposed to be mailed 5/16 and nothing yet. I'm 03 so hopefully in the next couple of days I'll receive it. It just seems so crazy how the irs is handling this.
Lisa98
Anyone get anything good in the mail today?

I really should stop calling the IRS, I think I like "testing" them. I've never gotten the same answer twice. LMAO
da47chief
no letters, no checks, yet. Bueller?... bueller?
Lisa98
QUOTE(da47chief @ May 22 2008, 09:22 AM) *

Ditto! There is definately no rhyme or reason to how they are distibuting these checks. There's a boat load of info RE:Stimulus checks, that just contradicts one another. The IRS is too busy to take calls from unhappy taxpayers. And what's worse is I don't think they know what's going on either.
da47chief
Well I have finally figured out why I am not receiving my rebate as a DD. H&R Block's "people" did our return and they automatically assumed that we wanted our fees deducted from our refund. I had already paid the fees but they submitted our return and had the fees deducted. My wife then caught the mistake and we ended up having to get a refund of our fees from H&R Block. ohmy.gif

So the IRS is sending us a paper check because they did not know we paid upfront. blink.gif

"Man am I glad I got people" dry.gif
