I hope my question applies to the thread. We had some work done on our car at a local dealership in 2002. Wrote a check got the car had same problem new mechanic showed that parts were not replaced. I stopped payment on the check and needless to say dealership was not interested in making it right. My Wife cannot write checks at some stores because of this. The dealership is out of business. How do we find who has the check? How do I dispute this? Any suggestions?

This is probably an issue with Telecheck or another service that collects reports of bounced checks from subscribing merchants, not a Chex issue.

Your first step would be to find out which service is being used by the stores that refuse to accept her checks, then dispute the information with them.

(In some cases - not Telecheck, I don't think - I believe that the reporting service also functions as a collection agency for the check.)

It seems the dealership reported you to SCAN or Telecheck. You definitely need to check them

Ok so if I find the company holding the account can it be disputed? The dealership is out of business

Use a debit or credit card instead of writing a check? I rarely write checks because I am in Telecheck.

I would dispute it with Telecheck ..don't bother finding the company holding the account. More than likely that way it will be deleted
