can a collection agency still try to collect on old student loans? its been over 7 yrs and i think i've paid this loan off by now. the government has taking my taxes for years but gc services is still trying to collect for the original balance. the last time the student loans were on my credit reports it showed 0 balance. gc services is calling my parents house and sending me bills to my address. what should i do? i wonder if i file my taxes next year will the government still try to collect.

No such thing as an old student loan. There is no SOL on Federal loans, which means they can always collect.
its been over 7 yrs and i think i've paid this loan off by now.
You think?? Have you kept track of your interest, the capitalized interest and the collection costs that you are charged up to 25%?

GC services is collecting what the guarantor is telling them to collect, which means any balance owing, is owing. Plus interest is accruing on a daily basis.
Are you aware that they can garnish you wages without taking you to court????[/quote]

You can request a payment history from GC services....the one you want is the guarantors payment history.

i've never sent a payment to gc services. when i made payments it was with another company. and i guess they sold it to gc serices. but now it turns out i have a split file on my equifax report(found out yesterday) and its saying i owe 3 students loans. less than $5000 all together. not from gc serices. its listed as an dept of ed loan. and it showing last updated 4/2007. its showing opened back in 1999. with student loans its still 7 yrs to report on credit report right? but they can just still collect on the debt forever. going back to the sticky to read i guess.

Student loans are never sold to CA's, only assigned. If you dont pay, the loan is often transfered to other CA's.

CA's do not report, only the guarantors. Who was this loan origially thru?? It quite possible the loans have been subrogated by the feds (DOE) and now the reporting cycle is starting all over again.

ok is it me or something just looks wrong about this. its 3 of these on my credit report. my original department of ed loans account # was my social # plus like another #. so now it looks like they changed the account number. also how can your high balance be less than your pass due? i thought high balance was as high as the account has ever been. then it has payment of $1298. (i guess that is what i'm suppose to pay?) this was from tc. i need an report from equifax but they want give me one due to the split file.

Don't assume that a balance for a student loan showing on a credit report is accurate. You still have collection fees which generally are not reflected. Have you called the CA yet??

Also, you may want to ask them about rehabilitating the loan. If you make 9 payments in a row on time, they will remove all derogatories regarding these loans.

"High balance" on the cb report is the original loan amount (the amount you borrowed). "Past due" amount basically doesn't matter on the original tradeline, but it should show 120+ days past due. On the subsequent collection tradeline (after default) the "past due" amount is usually the amount you owed when you defaulted.

ok i'm back... i found a credit report dated 2006 from equifax that shows i had 2 student loans. and it shows paid and closed. and i know those student loans were over 7 yrs old because i found an old letter also today from direct loans department of education dated feb 2000. stating that i have payments due. and it was 2 letters with the amounts. i've only had 2 student loans. so whats showing on my equifax report now i dont believe are mine. they are completely different account numbers. doesnt your student loans have part of your social. these 3 student loans on my equifax report now are different amounts from what the direct loan letter from 2000 states and also different amounts from what was on my credit report from 2006. so do i send a copy of my 2006 equifax report to equifax showing that these loans are paid? also i've disputed with equifax that these 3 student loans they are not mine. i got a letter from equifax today stating they were verified. or do i need to send off a validate letter to the student loans people. which i dont want to send a letter to the student loan people. i rather deal with equifax. they getting on my nerves. splitting files, changing addresses, now adding accounts that are not mine or if they are mine they should be deleted. my student loans are over the 7 year mark. i'm sorry

time for equifax to let them go from my credit file.

Due diligence letters showing payment due may show that you borrowed over 7 years ago but it doesnt count towards student loans reporting SOL. The student loan 7 year clock starts from the date that your claim was paid or the actual default date. Date of last activity is irrevelvant. and it was 2 letters with the amounts. i've only had 2 student loans. so whats showing on my equifax report now i dont believe are mine. they are completely different account numbers. doesnt your student loans have part of your social. these 3 student loans on my equifax report now are different amounts from what the direct loan letter from 2000 states and also different amounts from what was on my credit report from 2006. so do i send a copy of my 2006 equifax report to equifax showing that these loans are paid? also i've disputed with equifax that these 3 student loans they are not mine. i got a letter from equifax today stating they were verified. or do i need to send off a validate letter to the student loans people. which i dont want to send a letter to the student loan people. i rather deal with equifax. they getting on my nerves. splitting files, changing addresses, now adding accounts that are not mine or if they are mine they should be deleted. my student loans are over the 7 year mark. i'm sorry

i defaulted right after i got the loan. lol. i didnt make payments until years later when they started taking my taxes. i really dont think these are my loans because its complety different account #'s. experian, equifax, and transunion deleted my student loans earlier this year or over the summer. now equifax just report 3 student loans. completly different account numbers i dont think these are my loans. equifax sent a letter stating they verified. i had 2 student loans. my credit report is showing 3? does your student loan account # start with your social? becauase these loans on my report now are not showing any of my social number in them. i need to prove to equifax that these are not my loans. these loans dont even show paid.

Have you bothered to check??? Have you called the DOE?? Stating you defaulted on them right after getting them and then stating you dont think they are your doesnt make a whole lot of sense.
For starters, you cannot default right away. Your loan is in deferment during the period you are in school. Then you six months of grace. It then takes at least 280 days for a default claim to be paid with your guarantor.
