Has anyone ever written a goodwill letter to remove late payments? If so what were the results?
Cynic
I have sent letters in response to many goodwill letters from borrowers. Here is what they say:

QUOTE
Dear (borrowers name),

Thank you for contacting us about your credit report(s). After review of our records, we regret that we are unable to remove the negative credit reporting in question.

Federal law requires us to report accurately. Your account was 90 or more days delinquent on (date).

*The following paragraphs may or may not be included, depending on their excuse for being delinquent and whether or not they included how they perceive their current status with us:

(You are required to make your monthly payments regardless of whether or not you receive a statement. We would like to remind you that by signing your promissory note you agreed to notify us immediately of any change of your address at any time before your loan is paid in full.)

(Although a deferment or forbearance can resolve delinquency, it is your responsibility to ensure it is applied to your account before your account is delinquent. Your [deferment or forbearance] was processed on [date] and your account was 90 or more days delinquent on [date]. Therefore, the reporting on [date] was accurate.)

(Your current repayment status was reflected on our most recent reporting on [date], when we reported your account as current.)

(We would also like to remind you that we report on a regular basis. Your account is currently delinquent. To prevent further negative reporting please bring your account current immediately. We do report delinquency to all four national credit agencies if your account becomes 90 or more days delinquent.)

If we can be of further assistance please contact us at (800 number and website).

Sincerely,

(My Company)
