Full Version: Asked For ID at Half Price Books

The little debit/credit scanner thing had a piece of paper taped to it that said "We ask for ID on unsigned cards" Mine wasn't signed but the clerk never checked to see if it was signed or not and immediately asked for ID.

Hubby pulled out his DL as I didn't have mine on me. She compared the names and looked at me and asked if I had my ID and I told her no I didn't think so and went digging through my purse and came up with Hubbys debit card and showed her his and said, "I have his debit card"

She finally let it go through her computer and we were allowed to go on our way.

Now I could understand if it was a common last name but come on! His name matched my debit card (well except for the first name) and I whipped out his debit card which matched his DL.

It was such a pain in the a$$ for a not even $10 transaction!

Well technically they don't have to take the card if it isn't signed (Void if not signed) but most places do anyways.

You should sign your card because if someone steals it they can just sign it and go on a shopping spree and in this case wipe out your bank account. The signatures will match so most stores won't even question it.

Ya know I tried to sign it right after I wrote this entry and its like the back strip won't take a signature! I tried it with different pens and none of them would write on it.

I did start to do it with a black marker but it was so thick it'd be hard to read it.

yeah, I hate when that happens. For cards that I have trouble with I find a Fine Tip sharpie works best. It is more readable since it is a fine tip.

It also depends on the mood of the person doing the "checking"

My mother in law usually does the purchasing for our (very) small restaurant.

Last week, my wife wasn't around so I gave my MIL my AmEx card (usually she has my wife's which at least has a woman's name on it) She went to Safeway for some shopping. To get the Safeway club discount, she put in her other daughter's phone. Ended up with Daughter number one's name on the receipt (used her phone), son-in-law's name on credit card slip (used my card). The checker asked what was going on, MIL told her, and went on her way. Never even looked at the card.

If the strip on the back won't let you sign it... Call the credit card company and request a new card.
