I know we've discussed the use of a credit card as "backup" on a check here, but I went back three or four pages and can't find any threads on it.

Specifically I THINK the following statement is ILLEGAL in several states:

QUOTE

Payments at Nationals can be in the form of cash, major credit card, travelers check, or money order. We can also accept company checks, accompanied by your major credit card to guarantee payment. For your convenience, there is an ATM machine in the hotel lobby.

From my ever more feeble memory, I seem to recall that CAlifornia, where this event is being held has made it against the law -- not just credit card POLICY -- to do this.

Anyone got any homework help????

I'd like to pass it on to the program organizers so they don't get in trouble.....

They "CAN" ask to SEE a credit card with the name on the check for name match

THAT IS THE END OF IT...

THEY CAN'T WRITE THE NUMBER DOWN or SCAN or SWIPE THE CARD

Yeah.... but here is one place where it actually (I think is illegal) and I can't find it. I'm sure it'd be a pretty easy dispute should they try to charge it... "I didn't charge those tickets, I wrote a check. I dispute it."

I'm gonna go look some more.... (do my own homework, I guess.)

From a website called merchant laws This is a California law and your state (unless you're GEORGE and California is your state) laws may not include it.

Although Visa, MasterCard and American Express do not have the authority to prohibit the practice of writing credit card numbers on checks, the three card companies do prohibit merchants from charging a credit card account to cover a bounced check.

There's some interesting stuff on that site.

I noticed on the list of state's you posted, that my state (Wash.) is there. the state where the program will be (Calif.) is there, but not the state where the owners of the program are from (Texas). So I'm assuming he just didn't know. I'm gonna mail the owner a copy of all this tomorrow.

I don't get why they make it illegal to require a CC for using a check. I think it is a good thing. Instead of having a bounced check on your record they just charge the Credit card if the check is NSF.

You're not thinkinmg things through again. Now, they'd have your full credit card number written on a piece of paper with your address, phone number, etc. Not to mention maybe a person's SSN for those who are foolish enough to still do that... and yes, there are people who still do that.

Since when do you support increased identity theft?

YOU WILL PROBABLY STILL BE ON CHEX SYSTEMS FOR A BOUNCED CHECK

(even if it was eventually paid by the credit card)

BUT THEY WON'T PAY FOR BOUNCED CHECKS SO IT HAS NO VALIDITY

I have a backup card with my CU and my business checking account. Now the cards are
issued through the these banks. This is what I use as OD protection when I make large
purchases and dont have the funds in the bank to cover.

IT IS STILL NOT A GOOD IDEA TO USE OD PROTECTION BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE THE MONEY RIGHT THEN TO WRITE THE CHECK

You should be able to get a FREE credit card (even if it is only $200--$500) for emergencies

It would actually be better to use the credit card than write a check with $0 funds available

(even if you have OD)

OD IS NOT A CURE ALL

IT CAN BE EXPENSIVE

IT IS ALSO COUNTED AGAINST YOU (internally at the bank)

IT IS LIKE A CASH ADVANCE...THE BANK MAKES MONEY ON IT...BUT THEY DON'T THINK IT IS A GOOD IDEA

Some credit cards ask if you are going to use their card for a CASH ADVANCE

IF YOU SAY NO IT GIVES YOU BONUS POINTS FOR APPROVAL
