My son applied with FASFA and received the pell grant ( which I hear everyone gets something from them) and he got 2700, 1350 per semester, now that 1350 paid for his first semester tuition and books, but with his second semester he will have to take additional classes which the 1350 will not cover and his second year ( 2 yr college) he will taking alot more to get enough credit's to get his associates degree.

Now we are a family of five and do not make a very high income at all. I was wondering if we somehow didn't fill it out correctly?? A few other people I have talked with have gotten higher pell grants and make more than we do.

Also is there any other grants he can apply for?? Or will he have to take the student loan way??

Not everyone gets a Pell...they are need based with a max of $4000/year

You can check the calculation at http://www.fafsa.org/calculators/ What was your EFC and what is the cost of attendance??

Thanks.

When we did the FAFSA, they stated our EFC would be 1400. The total cost for the year from his collge website stated 9000.00?? This of course included tuition, books, room and board, transportation and misc.

I get $2750/semester BUT, I'm an independent student with a child and have 0 EFC. I think the amount you get depends on where in line you stand when the particular school does the financial aid applications (if ya do it early vs. late, vs getting it in right at the deadline type thing) and how much money the household makes.

My suggestion for next year...do it REALLY early. Fill out the FASFA (electronically) for next year as soon as ya can. For instance, if their priority deadline is March 1 to receive the FASFA, don't wait until Feb 26th to fill it out...Fill it out the beginning of January or as soon as you get all the information to fill out your IRS stuff.

Nope. For Pells and loans, it doesnt matter when you apply. The only loan that timing may affect are Perkins as schools are given a limited amount of Perkins funds each year. We used to run out in late September and January.

I knew it didn't affect loans, but I thought that when I asked the financial aid office one summer about getting grants, they said they gave the grants (including pell) out on a first come first serve basis because they were only given a certain amount each year...

I guess they meant grants OTHER than the Pell Grant? That or they didn't know what they were talkign about? laugh.gif
