Okay, DH and I take the kids to a new Souplantation in town. We had gone to the movies then went furniture shopping (well didn't actually buy but we made our wishlist for after closing). I was in a really happy mood. So I get up to get more macaroni and cheese for my DD. There is this man ranting to the poor woman behind the counter about how the steamed vegetables had butter and they shouldn't, he was demanding to see the management. I ignored him, reached around him to get some mac and cheese, I got to our table and DS now wants mac and cheese, so I went back. The guy is still there raising cane to this manager who is a young lady, looks no older than about 19. I kinda chuckled to myself and had to reach around again. He was just going at her how misleading it was and that steamed vegetables were just supposed to be steamed, nothing added (matter of preference dont' you think?) I mean he went on and on. The young lady was just looking at him not really saying anything as he continued to let her have it. Now at this point I totaly empathized with her so I looked at her, smiled, touched her arm and said "Honey I like my vegetabes with butter too." Mind you I NEVER even looked at him, he remarks "Thank you for your comment." But I didn't even acknowledge him and walked away. Now I know it was none of my business but I was just hoping to make the girl feel a bit better. I go over to get a muffin and this guy follows me and first says "Thank you for your comment" I answered "I'm not talking to you." as I walked around him, he follows me and then tells me he didn't appreciate it blah bah blah and how I should mind my own business, I raised my voice and said "I didnt' talk to you Sir", and I walked away, the jerk was at least 15 years younger than me. Now realizing that there might have been a valid reason why he can't have butter; diet, allergy etc...I know he had a valid point and he could have complained and asked for a refund is how I feel. But to go on and on to this poor girl who has no say in how the vegetables are cooked because I'm sure the cooks follow some sort of instructions given by the company right? At least that was my experience when I worked in a restaurant, the cooks followed menus given by the parent company. I didn't even mention it to my DH because I was afraid he'd tell me it was none of my business but I hate it when people are unnecessarily mean. So my question is, was I completely out of line here? Should I have just kept my big mouth shut?

well....lessee... I'm gonna post this before "someone else" does.

Had he paid for them with a credit card, he could have just initiated a chargeback...

No...in my opinion, you were not out of line. The guy sounds like he was being an a$$clown. I probably would have done something similar. Only I would have told him off in no uncertain terms if he were stupid enough to approach me. So...kudos to you! good.gif

I have seen stuff like that and I will usually say something nice to the waitress (if she isn't at fault).

"Steamed" means just that. It has nothing to do with the seasoning placed on the food afterwards. I eat steamed broccoli with butter all the time. I steam the broccoli, because the veggies retain their crispness nicely.

If he had confronted me, I would have told him exactly what steaming meant and hand him a Mason Jar.

What he wanted was "plain" or "unseasoned" food.

what a screwball. whining over butter being on his veggies. I would have told him where to put the veggies.

Hmm - this is tricky. I personally would have just ignored the situation completely, these managers are trained (or are supposed to be) to deal with these issues. Now.. if the guy was in my _way_ while he was letting her have it I would have most certainly asked him to take it someplace else because it would be disrupting my meal. Had he chosen to continue to confront me well.. lets just say there probably would have been some teeth found in the soup.

That would teach that jerk to complain about a little butter!

mamiof3, Where were you eating? Was it a buffet restaraunt? If that is the case, that stupid jackass should go to a sit down restaraunt where he can order his broccoli just to his liking without butter! Geez! Going into a serve-yourself restaraunt and complaining that the vegetables are not made just to HIS liking is ridiculous.

He was an ass, plain and simple. Nothing wrong with complaining, but it's not unreasonable to still expect politeness when doing so. He was an ass a second time to follow you, too.

Ok, now, having said that. Your comments most certainly were directed at him. I know you didn't look at him or talk "to" him, but you made it a point to say that he was wrong in front of him knowing full well that he would hear it. It was an indirect rebuke of him and his actions. If you were really only concerned with the worker, you could've waited until the guy was gone. I don't think there was anything wrong in saying something, but don't kid yourself into thinking your comment wasn't for his benefit.

What a sad time we live in when someone goes into a rage over butter on their vegetables. The simple answer for this jerk was to simply NOT EAT THEM!

Ok - Gotta go w/playthecreditgame here - the comment was directed at him - although indirectly. With that said, I also agree that you could have said something to the woman later. These days and times, you just never know what will set people off, and putting your two cents in isn't always a good idea. I'm sure these people deal with that kinda crap every day. I understand your empathy for the manager, but I do think you should have just MYOB.

What really strikes me out of this thing is the sentence in red - it appears you knew your comment was at least questionable - this could have gotten way out of hand had the man come to your table to "Thank you for your comment" - your hubby would not have known what was going on, an argument could have ensued (between him & the man), etc.

I DON'T REALLY LIKE THE TASTE OF BUTTER

IF I GOT VEGETABLES I WOULD ASSUME THEY WOULD BE BUTTER FREE
(unless there was a sign that said VEGETABLES W/BUTTER)

BUT I COULD JUST SIMPLY NOT EAT THEM

I SURE WOULD NOT COMPLAIN (unless they specifically asked why I didn't want them)

I DID HAVE AN ISSUE WITH A BUFFET THAT HAS STEAK

(I only ordered a STEAK DINNER)

IT WAS STILL MOOING AFTER 2 RETURN TRIPS SO I ASKED FOR MY MONEY BACK

ugh. We've been lucky in that department. USUALLY we get what we ask for (me: medium WELL, DH: well done), but if it took TWO trips for it to come back the same, I would be ticked. That's another breed of stupid. (I think I said that in the hamburger thread, too.)

And I can say that because I've worked in a hamburger joint before and have seen that particular breed of stupid up close.

I've seen people eat rare meat before me eyes and it makes me want to throw up what I've eaten. I don't know how people can eat meat rare.

I don't think you are out of line at all.

Nothing wrong with making someone feel better in public, and I'm sure she appreciated it.

And everyone else is right..steamed has nothing to do with what seasoning is on the food, steaming refers to the method of cooking the vegetables.

If he had followed me around and started on me, I'm sorry, I woulda turned around and ripped him a new butthole, pointing out his obvious ignorance and how he perhaps should get the cooking facts straight before opening his mouth.

As for rare steak heres the only standout rareness I've ever observed. I was working in a kitchen at a small restauraunt that had steak on the menu, but was not typically a steak house. As such the few steaks on hand were very solidly frozen and only thawed when ordered.

Some guy came in and order his steak rare, so we thawed it, tossed it on the grill, cooked it the typical 3 or so minutes per side and sent it out. Back it comes: too done. So Steak number two gets thawed, cooked for a minute per side and sent out. Too done, try again. Steak three probably still had ice crystals in the center when it got to his table but he ate it, and left the waitress a decent tip. Talk about knocking off the horns and sending it out.
