Full Version: How hard is it to get a student loan?

I've never had a student loan. I did go to college before on a scholarship but only completed one year. Right now I'm not sure if I want to go back to the 4-year university or go to a "technical college".

Originally, I had planned on going to the university and using their payment plan, but then I got pregnant which would interrupt the fall semester. Then I found out from my parents that if my father is declared 100% disabled I'll be eligible for almost $700 per month while I'm in school. I can't find any information about that online to verify it. But, I turn 31 next spring so I would have to be in school next January in order to qualify for it, according to them. My father still has to go through more testing before he'll find out if he's 100% disabled (one agency has already said YES but I think the VA is still wanting more tests).

So, I'm kind of stuck not knowing if I'll be getting any money for school. If the possibility of getting that didn't exist, I would have just put my plans for school off til next fall because of the baby... but who can pass up that kind of free money? Our credit isn't so great rolleyes.gif but I have no credit cards or installment loans or anything. My husband has a newer truck that we're paying for but I did not sign anything for it. Almost all of the bad stuff is about 3 years old or older, including the default judgment(s) (big post in the Credit forum about all that but it got pushed back a few pages with no replies). There are some accounts that are being re-aged but really should be off our reports within the next year because they are *that* old.

Our bank says they are a lending partner with Sallie Mae, and we've had this bank account for probably.. 6-7 years now? Would that have any influence on getting a Stafford loan with them? Sallie Mae's site says there is no credit check for some of the loans, but I've seen people posting here that they were denied and I'm not sure what would cause the denial.

Will I need my husband to sign anything for a student loan for me? I do depend on his income currently but I hope once I'm out of school and have to start making payments that it will come from my own paycheck. After all that has happened in the past I'd like to keep our debts separate.

For starters you probably should go to the FA page of the school you wish to attend. More than likely they will have a link to FAFSA and the school code which you will need. That is the best place to start for any finanical aid.

Staffords are guranteed loans by the government, so no credit check is required for them. It is the private loans that Sallie Mae offers that you are seeing people geting denied.
