Full Version: Where can I find guidance on SL laws and DOE policies?
CreditBoards > Financing > Student Loans

I would like to become better informed about laws and DOE policies that govern federal consolidated loans, as I have a hefty one and want to up to speed on its feeding and care.

Does anyone have a URL of either or both, in the original language?

Thanks.

What type of policies?? Most of the terms of the consolidation is on your prom note and loan disclosure statement.

Consolidation would come under the Higher Education Act. You can also do a search on the DOE site.

I asked because I have come to believe that the originator of my student loans may have denied my legitimate request to cancel part of the loans under provisions of the loans. I'm trying to to see if I have lost all rights to that cancellation because I consolidated.

I was a teacher working in a low income school for ten years. I asked for cancellation under the federal guidelines during the first three years, but the bank denied my requests, saying the school was not a low-income school. In my research, I found an ed.gov website that showed the school was listed as a low income school for the last year I worked. I've started an inquiry into its status in the earlier nine years.

NCLC has an excellent resource book at $80 that also may be available in a local library. http://www.consumerlaw.org/initiatives/student_loans/

They also have some info at their web site (consumerlaw dot org).

It is amazing how little the average student loan borrower / schools/ ED know about how this all actually is regulated and where one could find info about a lender doing business with the public in the student loan area. Even when you contact the actual ED GOv phone # they many times do not know what they are talking about. And many times provide really wrong information.

Yep. That's been my experience. They think they know what they "know" but as often as not, they are wrong. It's one thing to know the standard practices of yr office/profession and often quite another thing to know what is legal/enforceable.

I've found that it pays to educate yourself.
