Full Version: AMX Policy question - ID checking
CreditBoards > Special Topics > VISA MC policies

I was at the post office, and they would not process my transaction without ID. This is the first time that ever happened to me there, the manager insisted those orders come from Washington DC.

I called AMX and they told me that the merchant has the right to ask for id, and that they didn't do anything wrong.

I was under the impression that AMX had the same rules as Visa & MC in regards to requiring id - was the customer service person wrong? They had gone to a supervisor to find out the answer, and that is what the supervisor told him.

And if he was wrong, how should I handle reporting this next time?

NO ID ON SIGNED CARDS

MY POST OFF ICE HAS A SIGN THAT BASICALLY SAYS ALL CARDS MUST BE SIGNED WITH YOUR NAME

WHEN VISA/MC IS ACCEPTED AMEX FOLLOWS VISA/MC RULES

AmEx does not allow merchants to ask for ID. The customer service rep you spoke with is not properly trained or misinformed.

AmEx has NO ID (on signed card), NO MINIMUM, NO MAXIMUM, NO FEES.
skruggie
So how should I go about reporting it next time this happens?

I got asked for id again at Bed Bath & Beyond but because AMX didn't back me up last time I challenged the "no ID" thing, I didn't refuse this time around.

Is this rule in AMEX's merchant agreement for sure? I found it in the MasterCard agreement it's Chapter 9 Section 11 Paragraph 2. I haven't looked at VISA yet though to find it. I am going to print that part of when I buy my books this fall at school because those idiots always ask for ID and show them the agreement.

THE PROBLEM WITH AMEX (as well as VISA/MC) YOU GET THE WORDS OF SOMEBODY WHO MAY or MAY NOT KNOW THE FACTS...

When you login to your AmEx account online, send an E-Mail to AmEx to report the violation.

Same thing happened to me (search the board, I posted about it), but the agent I reached knew the rules, and was extremely surprised a post office was not following them. I haven't been back to see if that post office does it correctly now...

USPS is one of the best usually with following the merchant agreement.

They will not take an unsigned card unless you sign it in front of them and show ID. (So the "CID" crowd is forced to sign the card if they want to use it at the post office).
normal1
is your card signed?

Yeah, I don't know whats wrong with these post offices that can't follow a contract.

Does anyone have an AMEX document explicitly dealing with the four noes (not just the "no discrimination")?

I'M SO CONFUSED AS TO WHY EVERYTHING HAS TO BE PROVED IN WRITING FOR PEOPLE TO ACCEPT THE FACTS???

"IF" YOU CAN'T FIND THE EXACT WRITTEN PROOF THEY WANT (SOON ENEOUGH)...IT IS CALLED A LIE???

ALL MY CARDS ARE SIGNED WITH MY NAME.

Even the sockdrawered ones are signed with my name!

I'm just wondering if the reason behind the OP being asked for ID all the time is that the card is improperly signed or not signed at all.
skruggie
Yes, my card is signed - and yet, I get asked for ID almost everywhere.

GEORGE, I'm on your side here. Sometimes referencing a part of the merchant agreement helps when speaking with a manager or writing a letter to WHQ.
