I received the online dispute results from my first Experian dispute. They deleted some items, and "updated" others.

First question, is they included an entry that I don't know what to do with:
Important Message from Experian
US Dept of ED/FISL/SF
Please contact credit grantor at....
This TL was "updated" after my dispute, but no other info was provided.
The account is a student loan collection I paid off in 2002. Why would they want me to contact them?

My second question regards how both the above collection TL and the original student loan TL are reporting after being "updated" from my dispute. Both TL's report "updated", however there is no information regarding if they were "verified" or not. The only difference are some changes to the TL's, which I have highlighted in red below. The original loan TL shows up as a "potentially negative TL" in the EX report, while the one they are requesting me to contact them about is now showing up as an "account in good standing" on EX. Here is their updated TLs:
US Dept of Education
Status: Claim filed with govt./Collection account <----- used to read "Collection account"
Date Opened: 11/97
Reported Since: 4/99 <----- used to read 7/01
Date of Status: 2/06 <----- used to read 7/01
Last Reported 3/06 <----- used to read 7/01
Type: Installment
Terms: 129 months
Balance: $0
Account History: Claim filed with government as of March 2006 <----- is this the "update" and or verification? WTF does this mean?
Creditor's Statement: Student loan permanently assigned to government
This TL shows up under the "negative TL" section of EX report
Dispute result was "updated" (no other info given)

US Dept of ED/FISL/SF
Status: Paid in settlement <----- used to read "Paid in settlement, Collection account" (is this why it is reporting as positive, not negative?)
Date Opened: 11/97
Reported Since: 10/02 <----- used to read 10/01
Date of Status: 10/02 <----- used to read 11/02
Last Reported: 10/02 <----- used to read 11/02
Type: Installment
Terms: 36 months
Balance: $0
Account History: Collection as of Oct 2002 <----- no recent update to history from dispute provided
Creditor's Statement: Account legally paid in full for less than full balance
This TL shows up under the "positive TL" section of EX report
Dispute result was "updated" (no other info given)

If the collection is showing up as a positive TL, I don't want to dispute anything, or contact them and have them change anything. How reliable is EX's label of "Account's in good standing"?

Is there anything in the original student loan TL that looks incorrect that I can dispute? And what does that "Claim filed with government as of March 2006" under Account History mean?

BTW, I may be completely stupid, because I'm not 100% sure which is the original loan TL and which is the collection TL. They were both with the DOE, so distinguishing between them on the report is hard.

It looks like two different loans to me. The one that says a claim was filed is in default. You should find out who holds the loan and contact them to set up payment arrangements as soon as possible.

I know I have only had one loan, and the TL's report the same loan amount.
This is definately not two different loans. I had the original loan (Direct Loans) default and I paid it off to the govt collection dept.

Okay. You should still check because that DEFINITELY sounds like a default to me. If you received money for more than one semester, or if you received unsub and subsidized loans, you would have more than one.

There is no other reason I know for "claim filed with government" ...

I totally agree with Quilty that you should call and check. I have an idea of what might be going on, though (although not with the "contact USDOE" part). I also had a Direct Loan that I defaulted on and it does look like what you have there. I believe what this might be is that the first one is the original TL that was the original loan, which was filed with the guarantor for reimbursement or "claim filed with the government." However, the "government claim" was themselves, in a matter of speaking, so that's the second TL -- what would be the guarantor TL for someone who had a FFEL loan. Mine is the same way, only I have about 12 TLs for the original loans (sub and unsub for each semester for three years) and then one TL for the "guarantor" division of DOE. I think the "as of March 2006" part of the "claim filed with the government" line on the first TL is just what the status was as of the date they did the update. I'm really not sure why they're calling the second one a positive TL -- it's not. It's a good thing that it's paid/$0 balance, but the whole paid in settlement for less than full balance and the collection account parts are not positives.

Hope this helps! Good luck!
