Full Version: Tuition Owed to State School

So I have a hefty tuition bill with a state school from about 3 years ago, which was supposed to be paid by my father years ago. Well, he dropped the ball and here I am with a TL of a collection account with the State of XX Central Collection Unit. This isn't a student loan ... it is just tuition. And it isn't in default, atleast not yet. But it is a considerable sum: over $4000.

What are my options to have this cleaned up? Can I contact the school, and ask them to pull it from the State CA if I agree to make timely payments on it? Is negotiating a PFD even possible, let alone negotiating a different amount?

For the record, I have no contact with the State CA, so I don't even know if what they are reporting is correct. Should I start with just a normal round of disputes to all CRAs?? I figure a state collection agency will have no problem verifying everything.

Please please help. These school bills seem to be a whole different animal.

Just tuition?? State School = State Debt. Yes it is in default. It was due by the end of the semester you attended. Tuition accounts can use tax offsets for collections. Plus they frequently will file suit.

The school is more than likely under contract with the CA so they have to pay the CA regardless of who collects it. Our contract did not allow us to pull back either, without cause. Most school policies are to refer onto the agency. Settlements might occur if they have added collection costs, but you will be 1099'd. We did not do pay for deletes....a lot of school don't.

They will simply send you a copy of your student account and they will verify.

OK - So really, my only option is to contact the CA (or the school) and try to rehab through a payment plan. And then wait for it to drop off in FOUR YEARS?

Tuition accounts cannot be rehabbed. Payments on a past due/defaulted tuition account cannot be brought current.

I can't rehab even though it has been sent to a collection agency? I'm sorry ... I guess I don't understand the difference between this type of collection versus any other type. Is it that it is a "bill" rather than a "loan?"

Thanks Lynn, by the way. I read a lot of your posts on this board and appreciate all of your help.

Tuition is NOT a loan, it is indeed a bill. You cannot rehab a bill, only a federally backed student loan.

HTH.
