Help!
I have a SL from the 80's. I've received calls from an agency called Maximus. They have offered to work out a payment plan with me because the amount owed is almost $10,000 (the interest is eating me alive cray.gif). I'm just not sure if they are really who I should pay or can I request validation from them on a SL?
I understand this loan is unforgiveable, however I was wondering if it's possible to work out a settlement. I haven't received a tax refund since 1988, but fortunately no one has reported the defaulted loan to any CRA in the past 17 years, who should I try to negotiate with? Where do I start? How do I verify that the amount is accurate? How long before they garnish my wages?
Please Help?

I just did a google search and they are a DOE collection vendor. So not only are you dealing with accrued interest but collection fees as well. Sure you can request validation but honestly they will see it as a stall tactic. You can easily verify it yourself thru NSLDS.

More than likely. They will drop the collection fees and probably part of the interest. They will provide you with a 30 payoff at most.

You have to negotiate with the CA.

The CA is a DOE contractor and they log right into the DOE database.

How long before they garnish my wages?
With the age of your loan, probably sooner than later.
