If student loans go into default, and then you start paying by way of electronic fund transfers, will that reflect on credit report? Will you actually be able to see an improvment in credit score once you start paying monthly?

Nope. The loan is still in default and is still a government claim. The balance may go down but the status stays the same. Still negative.
