I just noticed on my Sallie Mae accts that they have added it a second time, with a new acct #. I am behind but sending payments, just not a full month because we don't have the money for it due to trying to get me therapy so I can go back to work.
The orig acct uses my SSN and is not on DH reports for some reason, guess it just fell through somehow. But now it is being reported for him with the new acct # which is nowhere near my SSN. Both are being reported as open, same payment, same late status, etc. Any idea why I now have a dupe with different acct #? Are they sending me to a CA or something? It has just been the past week the dupe acct has popped up.

Lenders are all moving away from using SSN as your account number. It doesn't mean anything special other than they assigned you an actual account number and are now using that to report. Same thing happened to me.

but are both of yours reporting as open and still owing? The old acct still shows a balance and everything. So it looks like I have 2 open and owing SLs. Very misleading. Do I dispute the old acct as a duplicate acct? How can I get rid of one them?

It showed up as an Account Change in my EQ ScoreWatch alerts. I haven't pulled a full report, but I'm assuming it only reporting as one tradeline on my report, just with new account number.
What type of report are you looking at that you see it twice? If it really is there twice, probably can dispute the old one to get it removed.

This is happening all over the SL industry, as threeve has said. Give it a couple of months to work through the system before you start doing anything. Patience is truly a virtue.

many thanks, guess its a good thing DH & I decided not to try to buy right now. OTOH, I have filled out the Direct Loan consolidation form and just need DH to sign it so I can send it off. I desperately need to get away from Sallie Mae

I just came over here to whine about the same problem. TU has once again duplicated my accounts. Adding $50K to my debt and $400 to my monthly payments.
NOT COOL!
Yes I'll be patient, I'm glad I'm not in the middle of closing on a house or anything. Thank goodness I just finished my app spree.
But it's just not right, this is a substantial amount of money. And frankly, TU has a history for me... I have many duplicate accounts, most listed as closed but still listed with a balance and a monthly payment.
I have posted about this before and had decided to just let it go for the time being.
But I'm just so afraid that TU will never get around to deleting the old account. And I'm terrified to ask Sallie mae to fix it. But if this doesn't resolve itself in a few months, I'll have to do something.
My SLs are now being reported as 4 times the amounts due, and 4 times the monthly payment. It was already being reported in triplicate. They just added a 4th!
4 TIMES!

Anybody have an idea how long this problem my persist?

I have no idea but I am not waiting for Sallie & TU to fix it on their own. I am sending out a letter next week about it and demanding the old acct either be deleted or marked as $0 balance and something to show it is no longer active.

Update:
Recent duplications have righted themselves on my TU. Old problems still remain, of course...
But it seems that the transition to non-ss# account numbers is smoothing out.

My SL reportiing has also finally straighten out. TU FAKO from TC went up 30 pts. I'm not pulling FICO but since it looked like I had 2 open SL and over 45K in debt, I'm hoping the dupe coming off raised my FICO. I did have lates on the SL too so having those cut in 1/2 should have some effect.
But at least I had not sent a dispute letter to TU in regards to the SL dupes, so I saved me some $$ there

Mine is still reporting twice on EX.

Yup! TU finally straightened everything out, and then this morning, EX had everything duped...
And I just applied for Citi last night. I hope they pulled before the duplication. Got the 7-10 and assesorize page. Cross fingers...

Yeah duped for me as well on EX. EQ never showed as dupes.
If you get denied for Citi, I'd send a reconsideration and explain about the acct number change and that the SL got dupes. They should be able to look at the 2 TL and see its the same thing, just different acct #s

Should we give this some time and see if it corrects itself? My gut says it won't but I don't want to start disputing without giving it a chance.

I think it's best to wait and let EX work it out. If TU could figure it out (King of dupes) then EX probably can.
It took TU about a month to correct it. I'm going to give it some time.

Neither TU nor EQ ever duplicated it on my reports, just EX. I guess I can live with it for a month since it's only a revolving acct.

Ha Ha, just for kicks I just looked at my Experian report from today. Guess how many times Sallie Mae is listed (including both open and closed accounts)...
Drum roll please...
I have 18 different TLs on EX alone, just for Sallie Mae!
Geezzzz!
I've, of course, also got Direct Student loans and a couple of smaller SL companies that also have numerous TLs... Boy, this is getting CRAZY!
Mind you, the 18 different TLs are not all due to this recent duplication, some of them are because of, IDK, different dispersments, consolidations, etc.? At least as far as I can tell.
I've never defaulted or anything like that (although I think I came dang near close at one point in time...)
Those SLs just like to keep adding stuff to my report. IDK, perhaps it helps with my "age"
We just have to wait this out. I have more faith in EX than the other 2 CRAs. Yes, EX is hard to work with, but I find they are more accurate (for better or worse) than the other 2. Just my experience.

I'm looking at my EX report now. The one with the shiny new acct number is now gone and the one with my SS# is still there in dispute. This is gonna be a cluster ****.
