I need some help on this issue with sallie mae. I graduated in 5/2003, My student loans immediately went back into repayment in 07/2003. I did know anything at this time; i though I had six months to pay. I never recieved anything from Sallie Mae, i find out in retrospect that i used my grace period when I took a semester off after having a baby. Anyhow unknown to me at the time I was racking up lates on my student loans. I thought I was ahead of the game (thinking that I had until nov/dec to repay) by trying to consolidate in 08/2003 with College loan corp. for some reason my consolidation took 4months and they sent SM a payment on 01/06/04 by CLC requested a 15 day payoff on 12/15/03; one day before SM rec'vd a payment from CLC, SM added a 70.00 collection fee. So the money was 70.00 short. I didn't know this or CLC did not know either . Sallie Mae claimed that they sent a notice of underpayment to CLC on 1/09/04 (CLC denies this happened). I didn't find out anything from Sallie mae until 09/04 when i get a letter from GA student finance commission stating my loan was late with SM. I called and the person wanted to have someone look into the matter in the meantime she applied a retroactive forbearance from 02/09/04-02/08/05. I PFb SM and borrower services stated that the information is correct, when they sent me the letter they stated that we sent late notices to your home address. what home address they didn't say and i have been using the same mailing address throughout my college career. Are my hands tied? Any suggestions? i want these lates removed??? can i sent a copy of the payment hx they sent me with it stating that there was a forbearance from 02/09/04-02/08/05???? ohmy.gif

Retro forebearance does nothing for your credit report and the CRA's will not accept them as proof.

Ultimately it is your responsibility to make sure that while waiting for a consolidation that your payments are up to date, right up until the time of consoldiation loan pay out to avoid interest and late charges. Waiting 4 months for a consolidation is not uncommon.
