I've been doing some reading on other's experiences with Pioneer, I'm no where near as exciting as other folks...yet, but I couldn't find anything on getting a pay for delete from them.

I've been going around with them since last week about getting a pay for delete letter on fees I owe to my school for a class I dropped. I was trying to get a TERI to pay them off and then they dinged my credit, dropping my score. At any rate, they claim that they are not the ones that reported the debt, but it blatantly states Pioneer Credit Recovery in Arcade, NY on my Experian report. They claim that the college has to take it off so my stance with them is that if I have to go to the college to get this agreement, my payments will go there as well and they can harass the college for their collection fees. I'm getting ready to do the whole C&D..etc with them, but has anyone sucessfully gotten them to remove a paid collection?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mhart

Actually Pioneer would be under contract with the school and there is probably  a non delete clause in the contract.  Also with these contracts the schools cannot intervene.  So if you C&D the CA, the school will basically tell you tough luck and deal with with them whether you like it or not.  The school will forward payments made to the CA.

That's interesting, thanks for that info. Do you know who I would request this verbiage for the contract? Are you saying that this is in the contract I had with the school as part of my student agreement or the contract the school has with the collection agency?

Thanks again for your feedback.

Your student agreement to pay your account includes your obligation to pay all collection and all legal costs incurred. It is all in your student handbook.
The contract between the CA and the school is not available to you. I only know what is in them because I worked with bids from collection agencies to collect student accounts when I worked at the University. I saw previous contracts from rebidding contractors.

Was this a public school you attended?? If so, you do realize that tax offsets are being submitted shortly?

Yes, it was a public online university. When you state tax offsets, what do you mean by that?

I'm assuming that you mean if you are in default of a student loan. This was not a student loan, this is money that I owe to the college for dropping a course. There was no financial aid monies applied to the class and I am in deferment on my student loans. Also, I live in a no wage garnishment state.

Thanks again.

This means you owe money to the state.  Your SSI# is submitted for income tax seizure.

No I am talking tuition/fees accounts.  Public school = state funds.  Also there is no such thing really as a "non garnishment state".  Government funds can be garnished easily.  Ask anyone here who has defaulted on a student loan.
Thanks again.

I understand what you are saying and if they take my taxes...well they take my taxes. I know I owe this university, I'm not unwilling to pay, I just can't pay them at this moment in the amounts that they are requesting. This being the case, they should have done that last year prior to turning this over to collections.

I kind of get the feeling that this is a special circumstance though, even the FSA who I called tonight stated that this wasn't considered a default. I was hoping that I could do a refund request with them to apply back to the university but they wouldn't let me. I guess I will just see how it plays out.

Thanks for all of your feedback.

Just a quick update, I spoke to Pioneer again tonight and asked about a rehab based on things I have read here about them. They cannot do a rehab because this account is not a loan or a student financial aid item. It is just unpaid tuition and falls under the same guidelines as a collection account. (Hence, garnishment is not an option in NC from my understaning of the law and since this is not state funds, I doubt that they will go after my taxes). Again, I deferred to them that I wanted a pay for delete letter and they are making the request for it. In the mean time I am calling the college and asking for the same thing. I guess the worse they can say is no.

If you attended a state university and owe that university money, they can and will go after your tax refund. What makes you think this is not state funds?
