GRANDPA (60+) USES A SIGNED CREDIT CARD...YOU CAN'T ASK FOR ID!!!

NOW 21-30 IT'S A JUDGEMENT CALL (FOR THE BOOZE NOT THE CREDIT CARD)

WAL*MART USES UP TO 27 "WE CARD"

BUT I HAVE ASKED PEOPLE FOR ID THAT I KNEW FOR A FACT WERE 25+ AND THEY ENDED UP BEING 18 THAT DAY!!!

ON THE OTHER-HAND I HAD ONE THAT I KNEW FOR A FACT SHE WAS 14...WRONG SHE WAS 20+

YOU NEVER KNOW!!!

Maybe he's a "young" 60. unsure.gif

My dad was carded at a baseball game when he was 47 while buying a beer. He hadn't been carded in over 25 years. He asked the guy if he was kidding. The guy said "No. We have to card." The guy looked like he was nearing 80. I guess all the whippersnappers under 55 are suspect at that age.

I would guess that the vast vast majority of people simply don't know. Even of those that do know, many probably don't really care. They're more concerned about getting home to watch Sopranos re-runs.

Had a guy come in a few days ago - had to be pushing 90...was making a purchase w/cash...he walked up to the counter and said "I left my ID at home - can I still buy this?" I told him I'd let him slide this time, but he looked kinda young to me!

George - I went looking on visa.com for the part that says it's policy and that visa can revoke merchant's use for not following policy, but couldn't find it...would love to show it to them.

Requesting Cardholder ID
When should you ask a cardholder for an official government ID? In most
cases, merchants may not ask for an ID as part of their regular card acceptance
procedures, either when a valid card is first presented or to complete a
sale. Laws in several states also make it illegal for merchants to write a cardholder’s personal information, such as an address or phone number, on a sales receipt.  You may ask for an official government ID or other personal information whenever you are suspicious about a card or a transaction. If the cardholder refuses the request or you are still suspicious, make a Code 10 call.

Had a new one a couple nights ago. Was shopping at Kohl's, paid with CC. Generally, if I swipe the card myself I immediately put it back in my wallet. This cashier, before she would give me the receipt, said "I need to see your ID or the signature.". I had never been given a choice before. I cheerfully showed her the signature on the card and she cheerfully gave me my receipt.

No real point to this, just sharing a new experience.

i have a question..i thought with the "new" protection on debit/visas all liability lies on the merchant, meaning if you own store A and take a stolen credit card YOU lose hte money..the owner of the card gets their money back and the thief gets whatever he bought? Or is it that lets say BofA; loses the money..? Someone has to eat the bill and I always was told its the merchant now days

It seems as though you know what your talking about on this board since everyone asks for you. While you tell people that you dont need to do their homework. I bet you would cut down on that if people could UNDERSTAND the post rather than something you cut and paste on every tread

Do you read and post according to what the subject is about or just copy and paste the NO ID bit.

the reason I ask that is what playthecreditgame said.

I guess your so bent on this ID thing thats all you can post about. ID OR Signature.... Most people that read that probably THOUGHT either show your ID or SIGNATURE on the back of the card. It would defeat the purpose of the option if she wanted to see your singature ON your ID.

ID without the card? You mean showing your ID with out the Credit Card?

Like I said, what are you talking about.. THAT makes no sense. You couldnt charge anything if you didnt give them your card.

Your right, doing that means nothing but what did that have to do with the post this was in response too. Full sentences please. Most wont need a "translator" then.

I disagree with this. As an employee you did not sign the merchant agreement and your job position doesn't entail enforcing the merchant agreement - that would be a job for a manager/owner. Informing a manger that store policy is breaking the merchant agreement is fine, but I would say that the employee should follow store policy rather than the merchant agreement, which they personally made no agreement to follow.

I always think it's funny when I use credit at the liquor store near my house. I'm college age, so it's reasonable that I'd be carded but they always say to me "Can I see your ID... for the credit card." I know they'd probably card me anyways because I usually get carded there when I use cash, but I guess they're trying not to insult me or something by saying they want to see my ID "for the credit card."

I haven't bothered to mention to them that they violate the merchant agreement when they do that because then they would just say "ok, well then I need to see your ID to verify your age." That, and I don't really care if a merchant wants to see my ID (as long as they don't take down my LIC# or something) because if they get less chargebacks that means they aren't wasting as much money and they can keep their product prices lower - benefitting me.

The merchant doesn't eat it anyway, unless they do not follow MC/Visa policy. If a merchant swipes a card, checks signature, and follows the correct procedures, the merchant is not responsible for fraudulent charges.

sorry store policy or no policy im not checking a 90 year old mans id for beer.. not gonna happen. personally drinking age laws are stupid and lame... they dont have them in europe and no kids over there act stupid behind the wheel ...in germany you drive drunk you lose your license no ifs ands or buts no exceptions

They are allowed to ask to look at the credit card if they have self-swipe (to check signature).

They can't ask for ID if the card is signed, though.

If they say ID or back of card... that is okay, because you aren't required to show ID (can show back of card)
