I only have my husband as a co-signor for a Sallie Mae ALT loan to pay for a yr of med school. Anyone know what the requirements for a co-signor is? Score? Automatic denial items? Most importantly... income to debt ratio?

I don't believe Sallie Mae uses a DTI ratio but generally, the co-signor must be a US citizen or have permanent resident status, all charge off's and collections must be paid in full and no 90 day lates in the last yr or 2.

Sallie Mae keeps their qualifications pretty closely guarded to ward off competition.

Do you know any lenders with more lax requirements than that?
snowpuppy
I don't know of any alt loan lenders who will write the loan with any chargeoffs or collections outstanding.

You could try to call a few and explain what you do have on your report and ask what their requirements are but my experience is they are tight lipped about requirements until you apply.

I have a few things (CO, Collections all at least 5 years old) that Im in the process of getting removed with a FICO of 659 from EQ which they pulled and I was denied on my own. My co-signor has no negatives on their CR. FAKO (TU) of 808. Is there hope?
