Hi, it is becoming obvious to me that I am going to have to get a private student loan as it isn't looking like the Federal loans and Grants are going to cover all of my tuition. But my mother will be a co-signer has a problem with her credit. About six years ago, her and my father were divorced. There was a credit card in her name but because she could prove that all of the charges on it were that of my fathers, the judge ordered my father to pay the credit card. He simply did not pay it and the credit card companies in turn put bad marks on my mothers credit. The company finally settled with my father yet put account settled on my mothers credit even though she did not settle with them. She called the company and told them the situation and sent them copies of the judges order. They company did eventually quit calling her for collection but still put everything on her credit. My mother then started contacting the actual credit companies. One of the Eqifax I believe removed the credit card companies bad remarks from her credit report. The other two credit companies did not however and told her that she would have to take it up with the company who recorded the charges. My mother has disputed this companies remarks on her and the remarks are listed as disputed on her credit report. However, I am afraid that this is going to interfere with me getting a student loan.

How much wait does the fact that a charge is disputed on a credit report when a student loan company considers a loan? My mothers credit is literally blemish free with this one exception. But I was wonder for my mothers sake, what else can she do to get the other two credit companies to remove these charges

Thank you in advance.

Dispute in writing with the consumer reporting agencies (CRAs) that are reporting inaccurately and attach a copy of the judge's order to the dispute letter. If Equifax is reporting accurately, then you want to send this dispute letter to TransUnion and Experian.

Make sure that you do the step above.

At the same time, send a copy of the dispute letter to the credit card company (the company that is reporting the information to the CRAs).

Thank you for the advice. I will pass this along to my mom. I know that she sent them a copy of the judges order before sending teh despute letter but I am not sure if she sent it again after it was disputed.

Thanks again.
