Full Version: Need a Loan for Medical School

Hey everyone,

I read most of the stuff in the introduction folder however I'm new to this board and the whole understanding of the credit issue. I read alot of the stuff but I'm assuming that my question (since it's so obvious) has been answered in the past. Anyway, I am trying to get a loan for medical school however, I know that I have bad credit. I haven't looked at my credit score yet but I'm waiting to receive them in the mail. Does anyone have any advice as the best and fastest way to clear up the whole credit issue? I assume that most of the stuff on my credit report will be at least 3 years old but I'm not sure. Any help would be great.

This is just my opinion, and do with it what you wish, but from my experience, if I had it to do over again, I would NEVER EVER get a student loan again!

If you think you've got credit problems now, just wait!

But maybe you won't make the same mistakes I did. I was so young and naive then (18 or 19) and they urged me to ask for the max each time, and led me to believe that my payments would only be $50/mth. I never even finished nursing school (got married, had a kid, etc., etc.) and I owe about 43K in student loans that are all on my credit! I'm just so overwhelmed with this and don't know what to do! I'm even getting depressed over it. I want to buy a house in a few years and can't because of my credit! But not only that, this debt is SO unreasonable, they've never been able to accept a payment that I could possibly afford, therefore they go ignored.

For now, I'm having to be invisible to them. They can't sue me because I have nothing to sue for (because of bad credit). My husband doesn't even claim me on his taxes because they could sieze it. If we ever get a house, it will have to be in my husband's name only. The problem is..I think about the future. What if something happened to my husband and the house was then in my name...guess what?! I could be 60 years old and they could put a lien on my house!!! UGH!!!

I know that one day I will HAVE to end up paying them, but I've heard they rarely take settlements, etc. and I can't see me paying them 43K when we can barely make ends meet now. Oh well, maybe one day it will happen.

For this reason, I am saving for my 5 year old son's college right now so that hopefully he doesn't ever have to get a student loan. I would not recommend them to anyone!

Sorry for venting, but I'm just so frustrated about my credit because of student loans and my poor choices back then.

After working your a$$ off to get into medical school, "don't get a student loan" is not a viable option. Medical school is a collossal expense compared to undergrad education. A creditworthy co-signer for student loans might work--i.e. parent, sibling, etc. You should check with the financial aid office at the med school. Many have very aggressive aid packages for students demonstrating need.

dirtbikeguy has it right ... is there someone who can cosign for your loans?

Might I suggest you start with the Newbie Forum to start cleaning up your credit. You can find it here ... http://creditboards.com/forums/index.php?showforum=15. You can clean up your credit on your own and in time get the loans yourself.

Good luck and welcome to CreditBoards and the Student Loan forum!

Unless you have a couple hundred thousand lying around, a loan is probably your only option. Is there a reason you would need a credit-based loan?

As always, have you filled out your fafsa?
