Sometimes I wonder why people just give up when it's the IRS. They are human and yes they can make your life miserable but they are just people. You could have gone the offer in compromise route and probably would have paid it off by now. Don't need a lawyer to bleed you. DIY.

What is the best investment strategy for a 5 year goal?
bullthistle replied to syncracirca's topic in Money Management
The stock market can be a great investment however it has up and downs and when you need to purchase a new car it could be down. Savings bonds are out. You need to hold them for 5 years. Unsecure investments are out as well. I know it sounds insane but what you need is a savings account. I know interest is paltry however the money is instantly accessible. No CD's. You don't have a lot of choice. Now if you had a longer view closed end funds or others would be a good bet. Dividends approaching 20% like DCIX or IGD that pays over 10% but you don't want to take a chance. -
Help, I don't know how to get the title for my car...

I heard the servicing was taken over by System & Services Technology, St. Joseph, MO and also heard their CSR aren't exactly consumer friendly. Maybe you can have a lawyer friend call or pay one to make the call, it will be worth it. -
Everyone does something different but open a brokerage account, I like Fidelity, and purchase some dividend stocks, i.e. clm, psec, dcix, boe, exg, igd, arr, fsc, etc they pay either monthly or quarterly. Go to Finance.Yahoo.com Don't buy at the top, DCIX which is near the lows, risky but it pays 20% coming up this month.

inheriting part of IRA and pension, what do i do?
bullthistle replied to matty8199's topic in Money Management
Generally speaking I would contact a discount stockbroker like Fidelity or Vanguard, visit one in your hometown if they have an office since you don't have a clue what the fees might be where your aunt had her account. I have a old friend who insists upon having a broker handle her trades because she will not do it online, she was recently charged $70 for a trade, and if you happen to get the wrong broker they could cost you money besides losing you some. Then go to Morningstar and check out some mutual funds and add a little each month because you don't have a clue what the market will do, like it could down big time tomorrow. Don't be like another freind that after her husband died she put the insurance money into a brokerage account where the balance only went down because she couldn't be bothered with learning. -
Use the USPS if you want but FedEx gets people's attention. Also address the letter to the CEO or President and state your point that 1-they cease and desist phone calls and 2-show them they have the right to contact you. Tell them to take a S or get off the pot.

Remember if you agree just use the money you were paying monthly to a bank to pay her off and do not forget. People like that are rare.

I'd get their main number and call and ask for it.

Expat Credit Report - returning to usa after 10+ years abroad
bullthistle replied to rdin8ude's topic in Credit Forum
You might want to check court sites to see if you have any judgments where you last lived and if so try to get them removed for bad service. Did you try to get the free annual credit reports? You might want to try to get some credit cards while you are overseas, like HSBC or Barclay. -
One free credit report a year supposedly. Last year I put a freeze on all three and got my reports but I didn't order them so when I went to get them this year they said I recived them last year. I wrote two letters and told them what I thought about myfreecreditreport.com and got two, Experian was the only one to balk. As I said don't beleive everything you read.

Credit Blueprint for the Self Employed Needed
bullthistle replied to cesarcesar's topic in Credit Forum
If you paid taxes you should have no problem as long as you provide two years of returns. But I'd wait until you return to the USA. But that said you might want to try to get cards from HSBC and Barclay since they have a presence in the states and they are UK based. Maybe to visit a branch might be better then online but take two years of returns and if they balk ask them for secured cards and then when you home turn them into unsecure. See a branch manager as well. -
Never beleive everything you read or what people tell you. I got the same letter from Accurint/Lexis-Nexis telling me they cannot change anything. Until a person has leverage or a good story. I got Accurint to change mine and got a phone call from HQ in DC that if I ever have a problem to call. No one will get anything done by whinning. I always send letters FedEx. It implies importance. Costly but it gets things done. I remember I sent a FedEx to the White House on 9/10/01 and got an answer from the IRS because I complained about their process. Most people respect the power of FedEx especially when you have a big problem. My take.
