I decided to go for it either way... It was a hard pull on EQ and I got approved for 12K.

I have a few pre-approvals in my USAA account and am being tempted by the AMEX with a limit of 'up to 25K'... Are they like Penfed where accepting doesn't include a hard pull or should I expect a hard if I accept?

I had my father join USAA like 6 months ago, he was USAF also (just honorably discharged). I had him open a cheap insurance policy just so I could join as a full member. I just got a 500K term life policy with them at a much much better rate than anyone else was offering.

I joined a few months ago. No pulls so far for Membership, Checking or Life Insurance.

My dad is also military, but I can't find anyplace to notate that on my USAA account and I automatically get kicked to the curb when I try to apply. Does my Dad need to be a USAA member in order for me to qualify for their insurance? Not only does he need to be a member, but he also needs to have purchased an insurance product.

It just approved last night so hopefully it doesn't. If it does, I'll try to get it taken off. They said a card hadn't been issued yet so hopefully that didn't start the process of reporting. As both GoHooterGo and myself said earlier, the damage is done, it will be reported. Speaking from experience, I doubt you'll be able to dispute it off anytime soon. Your AAOA will go down.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter, the card will still get reported to the CRAs.

No. Only eligible if you have to necessary military affiliation... USAA just started advertising on Penfed's site recently, just an ad targeted to an audience they believe would have a lot of eligibles...

Notice the account history section... I haven't disputed this account in almost 2 years, had just given up... The top one is from a PDF I printed out 7/20/09 and the bottom one is as of this morning through the back door. I hope this isn't some temporary glitch or a cruel joke just to mess with me!

Where did you hear that? It's not correct. DW has been a member for much less than a year and received a long list of pre-approvals during the last round.
-
Do they even give pre-approvals to someone that doesn't have a credit product with them?

I had one CSR tell me I could apply online for a "Second Chance Auto Loan". I did this but it apparently got coded wrong in their system and another CSR recoded it to be a refinance when I called in. I recommend calling in and speaking with a CSR instead of going the online route.

I guess this could blow my plan of waiting until the merge to see if I still want to join! I was considering joining AA for the no FETF but didn't want to waste time joining just to see them add one when they become First Tech...
