  1. cardcard, I don't use the card monthly, mainly I did a BT, but I do make monthly minimum payments on the 0% offer I have so it could be looked at as inactive re charges account but active as far as monthly payments. So that could make a difference. Or else discover just not give out BT offers, like George said he has no BT offers from discover. Discover is stingy like lot of posts here say. They don't give generous CL's like chase, citi, b of a. Retention manager told me if I apply for a new card 0% 6-8 months, I may get approved but it may be for only 12K max CL and my existing card 17k may be shut down. of course if I could get new 12k CL card 0% 6-8 months and then consolidate my 17k card(plus 12k) equals 29k @ 0% interest for 6-8 months, that would be good. Chances slim discover would do that. but like you say it depends on who you talk to. I could try managers at 3 different regional offices maybe and see if I could find one who would consolidate old card. either that or keep looking for a new BT offer, she said not many new offers (like George said)last few months. any suggestions? p.s. I left you 2 personal messages but maybe you don't check them.
  2. I have $17,000 available with discover (I just paid them off to 0 balance). I called retention dept and then the retention manager (like cardcardinsider told me before) but she said no BT offers available. I can only use$8700 cash advance/convenience check (23% interest, 3% fee) and mail it to bof a, which I may do, don't want to . (8700 is the max I can use for this year she said) How can I get $17,000 from discover to pay off my b of a card? Any suggestions on who to talk to or another strategy? thanks.
  3. card insider , thanks so much for your help, you're a genius. I just called citi and asked customer service to be transferred to the retention department. they asked what's it about, I said re retaining my acct and she put me thru and acct specialist right away said he had bt offer of 1.9% for 1 year and $75 bt fee (b of a would charge 3% times 29,000 equals $870 bt fee!). I gave him the chase acct # and amount and it'll be there electronic check in 2- 4 days probably. woohoo!!! ( it wasn't a 0% offer but 1.9% still good, and all I wanted to do was BT the 29,000 first priority) I asked him when other people call retention dept do they get the 1.9% offer deal. he said no, only if they have a good payment history, etc. he has to say "I can't help you, sir". Anyway after fighting with the managers/3 before, now it will go thru ok, hopefully. thanks again, card insider, quick work, thanks.
  4. thanks guys for your help , I'll try the retention dept. see if I qualify with customer service first.
  5. I have $29,000 available with citi card and I want to do a balance transfer to pay off my chase card (I just paid citi off to 0 balance) but citi says I can't do it because there are no BT offers available (spoke to higher up manager). I can use convenience checks but limit is $6,000 no higher and can't combine 5 convenience checks, 6,000 is max. How can I get 29,000 from citi to pay off my chase card without waiting for a BT offer(1 day to 3 months etc)? B of A and others gladly allow a BT with their 3% BT fee of course.
  6. ds9voy, if I can't pay off the 50,000, I would certainly consider bankruptcy as an option. good idea. The monthly payments at 2% minimum pay times 50000 equals $1,000 a month , $12,000 a year. a lot. it pays down principal too of course. with all the good opinions here, I have to think this over. thanks everyone.
  7. thanks marksman and everyone who has responded. I wanted to get different opinions and I did! thanks. I have different insights into this now. My friend is very close and I wouldn't do anything to take advantage and I am going to pay all the 50,000 back. thanks all for your help. p.s. yes my friend's credit may go to 589 fico but it'll only be for 30-60 days until I transfer the 50,000 back to my accts.
  8. banshee, you're right about the 30-60 days it could take for my credit to get cleared once I do the bal transfer to my friend, however if i have to wait two months instead of 1 month I'd pay the 15% interest an extra month. re my 589 fico right now I have bal transferred in the past cleared my accts to 0 balance and fico popped back up to 720 plus. so i hope it will do it this time, thanks for your help.
  9. cactus you are right about the 3% transction fee bal transfer each way for total of 6% interest. Not really want that but no choice it seems
