  1. Hi, I tried to do a search on this, but didn't see it. I have been using my Discover Cashback for a long time now. I also have the Amex Blue Cash, but I have found that the online shopping with Discover really could maximize cash back. If I am PIF and put almost all of my expenses on this one card, is there anything I should be checking out? Thanks a lot
  2. quick bump before it drops off first page
  3. Hello, I know this is not the exact board, but there are so many knowledgeable people here, that someone would know. A friend of mine applied for a new job and received it. She is very excited, but also being nervous about the background check. She had been with the same employer for 5 years, but previously, she had gotten laid off from Wells Fargo, as well as most of her team. From what I gather, it wasn't related to her performance, but I obviously don't know for sure. She has done pretty well at her current employee, according to her. However, she never mentioned the lay-off during her interviews, although she does have the correct dates on her resume. Do you know if a background check would show that she was laid off? How much information to large corporations like Wells Fargo give to background check people? I did research online and it seems that a smaller employer can give a lot of information, but large corporations have pretty strict guidelines to what they reveal. Is this true? Thanks a lot for your time
  4. I am not sure about Alliant. I am pretty sure they do. My brick&mortar bank - mechanics - does.
  5. I use a local bank for my checking - Mechanics Bank, which has branches across the San Francisco Bay area - Free checking with DD - No ATM fees I also have enough random checks in a year to merit having access to a brick & mortar bank + there is always an additional comfort factor, when you can walk to a branch and talk to a person face to face. For online savings, I use Alliant Credit union. I had to make a $25 donation to join one of their approved member orgs, but it has paid for itself many times over. To me, the big things is no ATM fees, and I was working hard to find one. I travel a lot and I want to be able to have the convenience to tap an ATM any time I feel like it, without having to drive around. I also like shopping/eating at mom/pop stores, which do not always take credit. Other than that, I always use a credit card (Discover)
  6. Hey, I want to make sure I understand something. You have $1,500 left a month and that all goes away on random expenses? Or what happens to it? In order to save money do this - go to a small brick and mortar bank, whose nearest branch is 30 miles away. Open a savings account and have a portion of your paycheck direct-deposited there. Don't tie it to any electronic accounts for ACH transfers. That way, if you ever need money, you will have to drive 30 miles. So obviously, you are not going to that often. If it comes with an ATM card or checks, shred them. I am also seeing people telling you to not buy stock. Why? That is matched! That's free money! (unless your company is terrible, in which case, don't do it). I am also sure that there is a time period on that stock. When it expires, sell it. Finally, I am not sure, why you don't think you have savings, what about your company stock? That's savings. It is liquid, so it is as good as cash, unless you have a ton of restrictions. Savings is not just cash. In fact, cash offers you the least return on your investment.
  7. I found one, inc ase people care https://www.mechanicsbank.com/mechbank/MBwebsite.nsf/personal/checking
  8. Hello, for the longest time, I have had Union Bank. They don't have many ATM's but if you had a $10k combined balance, you got free ATM transactions. Worked for me, because I have a CD with them fro $10k. Now they are bumping that limit to $25k after Jan 1st and I am losing a lot of priviliges, so I am thinking of leaving. I have looked into 1st republic, but they want a very high checking account balance, which I do not want to do. I move extra money into My Alliant Credit savings accounts, I never keep them in checking. I do want the brick and mortar access, because of the wat I do banking, so if there is a credit union or some other local bank gem, that would be great. My #1 criteria is to have something that re-imburses ATM fees or if not to at elast have a respectable # of ATMs. Is this a pipe dream? Thanks for the help
  9. Apologies if this has been posted before, but what were they thinking. I check it every three weeks or so and the new interface is AWFUL!!! It took me 43 mins to figure where my current score is, NOT the one from the last report I pulled. I can't figure out out how to see any alerts from more than 2 weeks ago. I can't see if a new vehicle loan I have is reporting, while the one I paid off is showing as paid off... And that's from a guy, who i svery computer savvy. What gives???? Does anyone feel the same way? Are you swithcing? If yes, what else gives you real FICO scores? Thanks a lot for the help
  10. Hello there, Has anyone else encountered the Discover 12K limit? I have pretty good income and high scores (740+), but I was told that the maximum they give is 12k. Has anyone experienced this? If yes how did you get around it? Thanks a lot for your help
  11. So I have had perfect payment history and I almost never carry any balances. My oldest card is 7 years old. I have a car loan that I am about to pay off, student loans and several credit cards. My score until 4 days ago 765. After my holiday and vacation bills hit my Dicover card, its balance is 4.5k on a 12k card. At the same time, my fiance has put 2.5k on the Amex with a 20k limit. Guess what, my score drops by 45 points!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unreal. How is it possible that I lose 45 points because the balance has gone up? So frustrating. I know I will get it as soon as I pay it off, but it is frustrating. Oh, and also, I have tiny balances on all five cards (like 20-30 bucks) because I try to rotate my non-main ones. My Discover is my main one. Thanks everyone for the help

  13. Hello, I just had a quick question, sorry if it is too basic. I live in California and I am planning on buying a new car. Now, the taxes in Cali, as you know, are really high. Is there anything that would prevent me from going to Nevada and buying a car there? It will be a new car, so I am not concerned about emissions laws etc. Is there anything more to it? Thanks a lot in advance
  14. Hi all, so I got an offer from Amex that if I subscribe to the food and wine magazine, I get a free airline companion ticket, a free $100 Gift card to a restaurant and 2 free issues. I get a 2 issues free trial and then 19.95 is charged directly to my Amex. I can cancel whenever I want (even after the free trial expires) and I get to keep the companion ticket and gift card. This def. seems too good to be true, so I was wondering... Is this legitimate? Has anyone done it? I read the offer details and it really seems legitimate, but I am skeptical. Thanks for the help
