  1. Just curious, but is it generally better (meaning better odds of approval and CLs) to apply after a new TL posts (assuming it's from a Prime with a 10k CL) or before? Thanks!
  2. Thanks WhyChat! After following with payment insert "a," I received a correspondence from the medical provider's attorney that since the account has been paid in full, the derog will be removed from my cra. How long should I accord the CA to remove the entry before commencing with the follow-up letters after the insert "c" section? Thanks again!
  3. In this case, I can see the value of freezing my reports. I check my CRs often enough to notice any new account or inquiry made under my name and my ssn #. My only concern is a person with a different name applies for loans, utilities, or rental agreements using his/her name, but my ssn #.
  4. I'm not so concerned about access, but rather another individual using his/her name applying for credit with my ssn #. I know that a freeze will keep anyone with my name and my ssn # from applying for new credit. But, will a freeze stop an individual with a different name using my ssn # to apply for credit?
  5. When you freeze your credit reports, is the freeze on your ssn # or your name? For instance, if I freeze my CRs, does this mean that anyone--John Smith, Jane Smith, or John Doe--using my ssn # will be forbidden access?
  6. http://redtape.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2010/11/30/6345521-courts-using-anothers-ssn-not-a-crime This is a shocking read. I wish some of these jurists, legislators and advocates would go through the first hand experience of having their ssn #s compromised, used illegally, and then years later sought after for reparation on unpaid debts, taxes, and medical bills. According to this article, since the person may be using only my ssn #, but not my name, it really isn't illegal. Now, I understand why I've received no cooperation, though the bank openly admitted to me that my ssn # was associated with another individual. Unbelievable...
  7. Thanks for all the advice on this thread. I've tried to get the account number from the Bank, but they've not only "clammed up," but also tell me they even seen the account anymore. So, should I file a police report anyway with no name or account number? If so, I'll do that on Monday, and follow up with the Bank's fraud department in writing. Thanks!
  8. Yes, this has occurred to me too. I've only spoken with customer service, and made it clear to the rep the account isn't mine, but has my ssn associated with it. He mentioned that he'll file an "investigation." I'd assume their fraud dept would be involved at this point, but I should give them a follow up call first thing Monday morning. I'm hoping it's just a clerical error.
  9. I've gone through my credit reports, and even checked the soft inquiries on Exp and Equifax, and haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary. Every soft or hard I recognize the origin, or cause. Nothing is on my CRs. So, it's possible for an entirely different CR report with my ssn and different name? Wouldn't the CRAs notice an identical number associated with two different names?
  10. Here's the thing though, the bank cr rep confirmed with me the account with my ssn isn't opened in my name. But, I will definitely file all the reports. Like most here, I've been monitoring my reports daily, and haven't noticed any inquiries that I didn't initiate. In this day and age, how does one open an account with my ssn, but with a different name? You'd think this would be easy to catch.
  11. You don't need their name to file a police report - people almost never know the name of the crook who ripped them off. And what if they DID give you a name AND an address - how do you know the crook didn't steal that from someone else? You don't. Good point. I assume there's no way to apply for any loans with my social # without it appearing as a hard inquiry on my reports right? I'm assuming that if John Doe applies for any kind of loan with my ssn, they'd realize the name and numbers don't match.
  12. There are several possibilities. 1. Clerical error - as in banker entering wrong number 2. Random id theft for w2 3. Someone who knows my information - from files, work, etc... Yes, if I have the name, then I can at least file a police report; but, it could also be an honest mistake. I'm just wondering what's the most efficient way to sort this out.
  13. You can't compel them to - they don't have to release to you the name and other information about someone who has stolen your identity. They will release that information to the police if it is demanded properly (read: with a court order) - they do this, I think, to indemnify themselves against law-suits from the other party. Realistically, how would you use this information if you had it? I've had this happen to me as well... so I know right where you are at. It is disturbing. None the less, there isn't anything you could actually do with that information if you actually had it. So, how did you handle it? I'm not sure how to handle this, aside from filing the reports with the IRS, FTC, and a police report. Is there anything else I could do to have this resolved? Shouldn't the Bank look into this?
  14. Yes, a real bank. I called the Bank (one of the big four) to cancel credit card. That's when customer service informed me that my social was associated with a checking account. They said they'd investigate, but can't inform release anymore information to me. I've filed an alert with the IRS. I'm going to file FTC complaint. And, I will file a police report. I'm not sure how to compel the Bank to answer my questions, since it's such a large bank.
  15. I was informed by a Bank that a checking account exists with my social #, but not in my name. Since it isn't me, they can't release the name of the person to me. They've only confirmed the checking account is active, has funds, and is associated with my social #. I'm obviously concerned. Any advice on how to best handle this? Thanks! PS - I've been monitoring my credit reports, and no unknown inquiries have popped up yet.
