  1. I felt like I was in the "Big Salad" episode of Seinfeld today- the one where George buys a big salad for Elaine but his girlfriend gives it to her and Elaine thanks the girlfriend instead of George. Then, since George did not feel like he received credit for buying the big salad, went to a lot of trouble to make it known that he was the one who bought the big salad, not the girlfriend. A week ago, I went to see a movie with friends and a friend's sister also came. I had met the friend's sister before and we got along fine. I met my friend out front and she told me she had already purchased the movie tickets and that I could pay her for mine. I had lost my debit card a few days before and was waiting on a new one to arrive so I was cashless and told her I would either buy her dinner that night if we went out or give her the cash later in the week when I saw her again. So we went to get snacks and my friend suggested that I share a large popcorn with her and her sister since it would be cheaper than buying individual sizes so I agreed. Her sister was holding our seats while we were getting snacks. I offered to buy the popcorn but she replied that her sister owed her money for the movie ticket and had given her a card to purchase their snacks. I usually see this friend once a week or so and was planning to give her my share of the popcorn $ when I paid her for the movie ticket. I had no idea about the drama brewing over some freaking popcorn. So before I left work today, the same friend calls and invites me to another movie and mentions that her sister is coming and warned me that her sister might be in "a mood". When I asked why, she said her sister was miffed that she did not receive a thank you for buying the popcorn..... I was a little pissed off since I'm paying my friend for the movie ticket and my portion of the popcorn so the sister didn't actually buy all the popcorn. Then I realized that my friend bought her sister's $11 movie ticket so the sister paying for the snacks roughly equaled what she owed her for the ticket anyway so she didn't actually spend any money besides what she owed for her ticket. The friend sent me a text that they had decided to go to an earlier show that was starting a few minutes later and invited me to join them for dinner after the movie since I was still at work. I had a really stressful day at work and this just put me in a really pissy mood. I turned the volume off on my phone and ignored the calls & texts from my friend. It is now almost 2am and I have had 5 missed calls from the friend. She realized that I was pretty annoyed and wanted to smooth things over. This friend suffers from depression and had to stay at a facility a few months ago so now i'm awake at 2am feeling guilty and worried that this is going to trigger another episode and she will end up in the hospital again. Good grief, the crap that keeps me awake at night!
  2. I'm leaving work early tomorrow to go see it! Too bad it isn't on the IMAX...
  3. I was pleasantly surprised to find direct flights from Orlando Airport (15 mins from my house) to Dublin for around $850 roundtrip on Aer Lingus during the fall/winter months. I'm trying to decide whether to stick to recognizable chain hotels $100ish per night or find a budget friendlier local hotel. Anyone have experience with hostels? I don't care about luxury as much as a clean, safe place to sleep at night. Thoughts on a guided tour versus just wandering around on your own?
  4. I'm planning a trip to Ireland next year for about a week. Any suggestions on the time of year to go, where to stay, what to see, what to avoid, etc? I'm also trying to do this on a budget and it will be my first real trip outside the country besides going on a cruise.
  5. I think you are living with my ex boyfriend....he once tried to cook fried rice (frozen) and play warcraft at the same time.He got distracted by the game and forgot the food that was cooking on high on the stove. My shower was interrupted by screaming smoke alarms and smoke in the apartment.
  6. I can't afford my own place right now so i'm stuck living with a self-centered woman who believes the world revolves around her. I work a lot so I don't usually get home until 7 or 8pm and generally hang out in my room. She sometimes knocks on my door and comes in my room so that she can tell me every little detail about her life and the same story over and over and over but never actually asks how my day was. So last week, I was hiding out in my room to avoid her and she asked me to come out and watch tv with her ( she only watches reality tv shows like housewives, etc and those drive me nuts)and I told her I was busy making travel plans for my vacation. I had mentioned my vacation more than once to her but she doesn't listen if it does not affect her. So turns out I'm going on vacation the same week she was planning to go out of town to a wedding. So she starts whining that she doesn't know what she is going to do about her dog and she is going to have to change her flights and her plans, blah blah blah. It seemed like she wanted me to say I would come home early to take care of the dog for her. She NEVER asked me if I was going to be home AND if i minded taking care of the dog (a fat yappy poodle)before she made her plans. She just assumed that I would be home and would watch the dog. Then, she kept asking me what day I was coming home so she could change her flights and I told her it would be sometime that weekend most likely saturday or sunday but I wasn't sure yet. She said to let her know as soon as I finalize my plans. Everyday, I have heard her whine and complain that there was never an issue with someone staying with the dog and she is going to have to cut her trip short. Again, she never asked me before this conversation. So I finalized my travel plans yesterday and booked a flight home that friday night. I was trying to be nice and sent her a text letting her know that I would be home that friday night. She doesn't respond. I get home around 8pm and the first thing out of her mouth was " You drive me crazy, I thought you were not going to be home until Sunday and now you are coming friday and I have already asked someone to come over friday to watch the dog". I reminded her that I told her that I did not know what day I was coming home and that it was probably going to be saturday or sunday but I wasn't sure and that friday is only 24 hours earlier that I had possibly planned. The more I think about this, the madder I get. She is a teacher so she is off the entire summer and I have only 1 week off for my vacation but she somehow expected me to make my plans to accomodate her needs. Btw, this is the same woman who says we give away too much in this country and that we should do away with free bus transportation to schools and that parents should be responsible for making arrangements to transport their kids to school (she has no children).
  7. I have been having a lot of trouble sleeping lately because of a roommate situation and a not so comfortable bed. I had a 3 day weekend, took a nap on sunday, and was still exhausted last night. I went to bed early enough last night that i could have slept 9 hours if I was able to sleep through the entire night. So this morning, my alarm goes off an hour before I have to get up as usual. I hit the snooze button and had the weirdest dream.... I was emailing the lady in HR to make sure my boss had signed off on my vacation request for April 8 (which was today in my dream) then I was at the Southwest ticket counter getting a boarding pass but I had forgotten to bring any luggage. I'm not sure where I thought I was going since I only took 1 day off.... I had convinced myself in my sleep that I was off today and was an hour late to work.
  8. I was having dinner at my aunt's place and opened her freezer door to get ice and noticed a bag of shrimp in the door of the freezer. The back of the bag was facing out and said "Contains: shrimp" clearly written on the back of the bag like the warnings about contains nuts or whatever for people who have allergies. Wouldn't a bag of shrimp contain shrimp.... instead of um chicken? If you buy a bag of shrimp, do you really need a warning that it contains shrimp in case you were expecting beef?
  9. Both were general dentists and I would go to an endodontist for the root canal or an oral surgeon for the extraction. Funny how you don't have pain until you go to the dentist and he tells you that if you don't get it taken care of right away then you will end up in the ER with an abcess and then have to come back to him anyway for the root canal so he couldn't understand why I didn't want to get started on things today and that if it doesn't hurt it will very soon......... I swear i'm borderline hypochondriac once i learn something is wrong
  10. I haven't been to the dentist in about 2 years since I was without insurance for awhile then changed jobs and got new insurance that my regular dentist does not accept. So I finally locate a new dentist and make an appointment for what I thought would be a routine check & cleaning since my teeth are in good shape and i'm not having any pain or problems. The dental office was a little scary and the dentist was hesitant about what she found. She thought she saw something on the xray and I ended up re-taking 3 sets of the same xray before she decided that I had a cavity and needed a root canal. The tooth in question is the very last one on the top of my mouth. The words "root canal" stopped my heart and i started breaking out in little red patches all over my skin like hives. I think I had fillings when I was a kid but I haven't had anything besides cleanings in years and never a root canal. She had trouble seeing it because she could not get my mouth open wide enough to actually see it. To make things worse, she told me that I would come back to her for the crown after getting the root canal but she wasn't sure how she was going to be able to put it on since she could barely get to the tooth to look at it. That scared me enough to get a second opinion so I had the appointment today. The new dentist had better equipment and was able to confirm that the tooth had a cavity and wanted me to have a root canal. The root canals plus crown are going to cost a small fortune that I do not have right now. I need them on 2 teeth and they are both located on the top and the last tooth on the end (one on each side) and very hard to get to. I know from experience that my mouth might not open wide enough to access them since the oral surgeon had to make incisions to get my mouth open wider when he took my wisdome teeth out. I asked the dentist if he thought I could extract them instead (much cheaper) but he kept insisting root canal is the way to go. I'm a little freaked out right now and according to him, I need to make a decision right away. The dentist was pushing me to get started right away and wanted to get the crowns ready right away. What was your experience with root canals? Did they hurt? Do you have problems? Is extraction a bad idea?
  11. I was trying to be proactive and get my address changed with a former employer before they sent the W2 to my old address where my ex still resides. The company was sold and the name changed but I was able to track down one of the former managers and was told to contact ADP since they processed payroll and would be responsible for sending out the w2s. I did a chat session with an ADP rep and was told that they do not have access to this information. I'm pretty concerned because the w2 usually has your full Social Security number and income information and I do not want my ex to "accidentally" open that. The ADP rep suggested that I change my address with the postal service but that would sent an address change notification that contains my new address to the former address where my ex lives and that won't work either since it was a rather nasty breakup. Any suggestions on how to get this straightened out before my w2 takes a roadtrip around the state?
  12. A few more questions.....Revised budget/payment plan for input I am single, no kids so I have my w-4 set at single, 1 withholding allowance. I get a small refund every year- only a couple hundred. Should I adjust it even more? How would I adjust it if I do not have any dependents to claim on the w-4? Could I claim 2 so they withold less tax and maybe just pay in a small amount when I file my tax return? I can't move back to my parent's house right now since I'm locked in a lease with my roommate for another year. I do utilize ways to cut corner's as much as I can, coupons etc. My roommate and I go to Sam's and buy about $300 in food and split the bill and it usually lasts about 2-3 months before we go back. Not a lot of variety in the diet right now but we are saving money. We buy food that can be used in different meals. I bring lunch to work everyday and we hardly ever eat out except for special ocassions. We go to the budget movies and pay $2.00 per person to see a movie but do not purchase snacks there. I've inquired about my cell phone and I'm at the minimum plan that they have while being under contract. I will keep looking there. I have stopped using credit cards for the last few months and have been working to pay the balances down to where I can pay the balance off every month when I use them. I have been using the extra to pay down cc debt when I think I may be better off applying it to the furniture/loan first and then attacking the cc after those are paid off. I'm still searching for a better job but haven't found anything yet. Will keep looking and/or pick up a second job in july when the other student loans are due. After reading the comments, I did a new budget/ monthly payment plan to attack the balances: $1620 take home pay $500 rent/utilites/renters insurance, etc $74 phone $100 - 2 student loan payments ($50 each) $73 insurance $80 cc payments (4 cards with small balances, minimum payments until furniture/loan is paid off ) $45 prescription drugs $250 furniture payment- $2300 balance $223 loan - $1100 balance $275 personal expenses, gas, food, savings etc the plan is to pay the min on cc payments until I get the loan and furniture paid off to save on interest. I will use whatever I have left over from my personal expenses each month to put in my ING savings account that I just started. I will try to negotiate a smaller payment plan for the student loans so that I can pay off the rest of the debt faster and then attack the student loans after the other debt is taken care of. Do you think this is a solid plan or do I need to make a few changes to tweak the results?
  13. I need a little help from the experts here. I've been reading through this site for years and now have almost spotless credit I'm now in need of some financial advice. In Jan 2009, my hours were cut to part time and it wasn't until almost the end of the year that I was able to find another job. I looked through every job site imaginable a few times a week and almost gave up when I finally found a new job in late September 2009. To make things worse, my roommate lost her job and I had to take out a high interest emergency loan to cover car repairs and expenses in the same month. Things have improved a little and I need some advice on how to pay down debt/save, what to pay first, etc. I am 27, single, live with a roommate, savings was wiped out due to spending $2,000 in car repairs while I was working part time last year, no retirement, just started an ING savings account $20 Monthly income: $1620 (after taxes) Fixed payments: Rent/utilities average $500Phone $74 (under contract) Insurance- car $73 2 student loans that i'm currently paying on -$100 (others are in deferment until Jul 2010) Furniture $100 min payment (bought at a $0 interest for a year but due to the job hours being cut i wasn't able to pay off as I had planned before the high interest starting adding up) balance is around $2300 high interest around 20% loan- $1100 balance high interest, min payment $130 cc 1 $628 (balance) cc 2 $595 (balance) cc 3 $183 (balance) cc 4 $843 (balance) Personal expenses, food, gas, etc $275 In july, my student loans will be out of deferment? status and my total student loan payment will be around $450/ month. I would like to start contributing more to my savings account as well as opening some type of retirement account. Should I hold off on the retirement account until some of the debt is paid off? What do I attack first? TIA
