I usually post in the Credit Forum, so I apologize if I'm beating a dead horse here.

DH has about $4500 in SLs from his brief stint at college through the USDE (all subsidized). He just didn't bother to pay them for a long time, till I finally forced him to apply for forbearance. They did NOT get CO or anything. They are currently in deferment because he is on active duty military service.

Anyway, since they are subsidized, he hasn't had any interest accrue. I guess he sort of rehabbed them when he applied for deferment because all of the past negatives were gone from EX and EQ.

TU still shows multiple lates, but currently in deferment. I've called the USDE SL people and they basically told me that there isn't anything they can do about this reporting (although I didn't mention that they had deleted the lates from EX and EQ).

I will try disputing them as "never late" with TU, but I just wondered if anyone had any other input or suggestions. TIA.

Kris

P.S. Another question: should we try to get those lates removed BEFORE consolidating (even though we will be consolidating with Direct Loans because he only has one lender)? I read the Omsbudsman's links, too, so I am curious. Thanks!

Actually, no they weren't rehabbed. If he did not sign up for the rehab program and complete the requirements, then they aren't considered to be rehabbed. Rehabbing requires 12 monthly payments, so deferment wouldn't count towards that.

That is correct - only rehabbing guarantees that you'll get negatives removed (with some exceptions but that's another complex topic).

You could also try a goodwill letter. It may or may not work since your husband isn't currently paying. If it doesn't work, you could try again later once he is paying. You can also continue to try disputing. There's really no guarantees here. That's no reason to give up hope, but just don't want to offer you a guaranteed solution because there isn't one.

I don't think it would really matter one way or the other. Just keep trying and post back and let us know what happens!!

Good luck
