Today I was talking on my cell phone when our main line rang … My wife answered and on the line was someone claiming they were with GRC and they need to talk with me. My wife told them I was on another line and asked to take a message. The lady stated there would be no messages taken and that she wanted to speak with me right that minute.

My wife stated I was busy at that moment and asked again if she could take a message. She also inquired about who GRC was - who she represented. The lady refused to provide that information and again demanded that I be placed on the phone. I then placed my cell call on hold and went to the other phone not very happy at all.

I immediately demanded to know who she was and what she was calling for. She said she was with GRC - I said yes but who is GRC - she told me and I stated I would get back with her I was in another call - she stated no that’s not acceptable - she said "youre not in control any longer" that .. "she/they were" ... I told her NO I was in control and hung up.

Are these the type of strong armed tactics I can expect in the upcoming months/years having a student loan in default? Her tone and conduct were totally unacceptable!

Their timing is impeccable – we were interested in obtaining a mortgage and knew the defaulted loan would bite us so I was considering rehabilitating the loan(s). BUT if they want to play bully I have NO intention of dealing with them.

The very brief phone call came across as if they were the mafia and that I was about to have my ankles cast in cinder blocks for a swim in the river if I didn't comply to her every wish. Disturbingly aggravating to find out how our government works!

HELP :cry2:

This is from the GRC website!!http://www.generalrevenue.com/borrowers/borrow_home.asp

A Borrower-Sensitive Policy

Getting your finances back on track is not easy. In fact, it can be one of the most difficult challenges that anyone faces in life. With this in mind, GRC's recovery specialists are trained and continually reminded to be respectful when they contact borrowers. All employees must complete an intensive training program on the various provisions of the "Fair Debt Collections Practices Act" (FDCPA). This ensures that the borrowers we contact receive professional, respectful treatment, as mandated by the U.S. government

I would suggest calling back in thru the main switchboard and ask for qualified manager or Vice President of the Division.

WOW - I guess I was sorely mistreated. Thanks for the link I will have to read up on GRC.

I am new to the defaulted student loan process and eager to learn how I can rectify the situation especially in lieu of a favored mortgage. However as I stated I have no desire to deal with individuals and/or groups that insist on being abrasive – intimidation tends to make me more of a rebel.

I’d much rather hire a lawyer and pay them to deal with the mob. Hopefully that wont be necessary – I just need to educate myself on the process and arm myself with the ammunition to bring the matter to a timely conclusion. This site looks like a good start for that ;)
