Tonight is Bush's big night - his biggest topic tonight will most likely be on the social security reform - so if you are interested in what is going to happen (personal savings accounts) which i am actually for as i am younger and we all know things have to change and SS is something that is going to have to be privatized sooner than later. we can comment after if you would all like. just my thoughts and i will be sure to post my comments after the address

I agree, but it will never happen. Do you remember Clinton and universal health care? The polarity of the two party system will never allow this to take place. To expensive. You don't think the government is going to actually fix a problem 25 years ahead of time, do you?

i think bush is going to push hard to accomplish something - its all about compromise - clinton (hillary and bill) did nothing with medicare/healthcare but bush got that perscription card which is a start to that problem - something needs to happen with social security - sooner than later - cannot wait to see what bush says tonight

Just try to keep the discussion non-political, or it will get too heated. Make people stick to the financial aspects of the discussion.

We do have a political forum, it's a little messed up technically right now, but if you want to post there, let me know and I'll explain how to navigate the screwed up parts of it.

I have thought Bush's ideas for SS were great even before he got elected the last time (I didn't vote for him the first time). It does look as if it will be a rough road to get any reform, Dems in congress seem to think it is just fine, of course they are older than me. I also wanted to see a simpler tax code and to keep the tax cuts. I have been married for 13 years and only in the last 3 did we not owe money. Last year we got a nice return (it was probably the 4 kids) I would really like to be able to figure out how to break even, so that the govt does not earn interest on our money, but unless you are a CPA good luck.

Anyways I thought it was a pretty good speech. Just hope some of it gets done. :dntknw:

sorry i didnt comment last night - something came up - however i did tivo the speech and thought it wasnt as refined as it was supposed to be - nevertheless something does need to change and as bush said - "Our society has changed in ways the founders of Social Security could not have foreseen." - so incase anyone missed it here is a link to the transcripts (this one is specificly for SS but you can retrive the entire thing) -

I'm 21 and I have a 401k starting to build (as of last Sept...you have to be 21 before you can invest in 401k :search: ). I view this as a responsible thing, and have NO intentions of pulling from 401k at any time, except POSSIBLY when I go for a mortgage in 3-4 years (and that's ONLY as an absolute last resort...we are waiting specifically so we will be financially sound before moving into our own home).

While I *wish* social security would be kept on track and remain the same as it has been (after all, I have been putting money into it for 5 years now), I realize it likely won't happen. What I would like to see, is the ability for myself to take the money I'm putting into social security, and instead roll that into my 401k. THAT would be nice. :(
