Bargain shoppers beware: Some major retailers may be misleading consumers with those big sales. We all love a good sale, and when you see that sign — 20 percent off, 30 percent off, 50 percent off — you assume you're getting a deal. But we found that the sale price may not be a deal at all.

Now, customers are fighting back with class action lawsuits against two of the country's most popular chains.

Two major retailers, Kohl's and J.C. Penney, are now accused of deceiving customers — selling products at regular prices, but calling it a sale.

This practice drives me crazy.

People want to feel like they got a great deal, which is why this works. It doesn't mean they got a good deal, but they sure feel like it...

Mervyn's here in Southern California was also big on this strategy. It was rare to go into that store and NOT find most of the stock "on sale" at 40% off.

When they went out of business they put up enormous signs inside the store - ALL MERCHANDISE MUST GO - 20% OFF. People couldn't fill their carts fast enough at half the normal "discount", and even when they were down to their final days and very limited stock the discounts didn't get much below what you could have paid on a normal day at that store.

Meh, they have been doing it for years. Belk is the worst.

It is actually a reverse sale. If you want to get something the first day it is out, you pay the marked price ....otherwise, wait a day or two and it goes on sale.

I think I have only paid the full price once or twice on a "must have" outfit. (ya know, check it out and find it is the only one in my size....I go on and pay the extra)
I don't do that much anymore because many of them you can find online now.

I think a class action suit is sort of dumb. They have been doing this for years - it is their marketing strategy. Penneys didn't always do it, but I think they finally came around to doing it the way belk, macy's, and all the other mid-level department stores are doing it.

If people haven't figured it out after all this time, they aren't the brightest of the lot.

Belk is still around? I haven't seen one since I was in Charlotte years ago, thought they went under or merged with Mervyn's.

Retailers have always been about deception. Look at how the extremely high end retailers mark the sizes in women's clothes...a size eight is marked as a size four, and the price is doubled. They sell out very quickly.

All stores use deceptive marketing. Heck, even grocery stores. I used to get excited to see those fantastic buy one get one free or buy one get two free sales. Then I quickly realized the price was jacked up on the first item, and the deal wasn't that great after all. Regardless if something says "sale" or not, people have to decide for themselves what they are willing to pay and what the item is worth to them. Point being, if a beautiful shirt says it's 50% off, but the price is $xx with that discount, I have to decide if it is worth it to me. If I've had my eye on it for awhile and it truly is discounted that much, I may just buy it. I would never buy something just because it claimed to be a certain percentage off.

Geez, poor JCP just can't catch a break. Their profits were in the toilet so they brought in a new CEO, who scrapped all the "sales" and tried an "everyday low price" strategy - and guess what? Nobody bought, because the same shirt that they bought "on sale" for $10, they wouldn't buy not "on sale" for $10. They kicked out the new guy and brought back the discounts...and now they're getting sued. SMH

I actually like JCP. :dntknw:

Although I don't like their new CEO. He will definitely take them down the sewer.

He royally ticked me off when he decided that they won't carry the longer length curtains and such (although you can still get the "custom drapes" (for 5x more). JCP was about the only company that sold longer drapes and a fair price.

The CEO himself decided not to sell long curtains? That must have been quite a battle escalating up many layers of management.

I have a suit from JCP. I didn't have a choice...it was for a wedding and it's what the groomsmen/best man were told to buy. It's definitely a $200 suit. I've been there a few times, and they have NOTHING decent it seems. I stick with Macy's. Yeah, they may be a bit more money but they don't play games with sales and crap.

I HATE HATE HATE Herberger's (anyone in the midwest should know what that is.) They have all these "sales" and "coupons," but you can't use it on this, this, this, this, this, this, or that. So I have this coupon, or this sale...but I can use it on one item? No thanks. I'll pay more to not play games.

What ultimately gets me boiling is that you can never apply the store credit card discounts or use the coupons on colognes. Except Macy's or Bloomingdale's, if you open the card in the store and buy the cologne that same day - that is when you get the 20% off anything in-store.

I don't like those stores that always have sales and then expect you to have a coupon because no one pays the price on the tag.

Just put a real price on the tag and be done with it.

I have to say I agree with you 100%

Although I do like closeout sales (I mean, real ones)

In my opinion, Macy's is one of the worst of the gameplayers!! Kohl's comes in first. Their athletic wear costs more than Dicks!!

Actually, pretty much. (although I am sure there was input). He slashed out a lot of things. A big portion was in the housewares a closeout stores. There was an article on it a year or so ago. Although I can't remember who did it. I waited a few weeks and went a bought all the curtains we needed before they sold out (we don't have typical 8 foot ceilings).
