Is it a good rule to only use maybe 3 INQs per year?

Say, to get CLIs on existing accounts. Is that a good way to keep credit good?

I'm presently gardening and paying down high balance,s just asking.

Three new accounts a year I think is a good number, but I limit myself to two. Even if you're into the bump, creditors still will see new accounts. Both new and current creditors may get nervous about that if the number is too large.

It depends on where you are in the building/rebuilding process. If you think strategically (long term) and don't add garbage the number of accounts and inq's is an arbitrary sum.

For example, think about:

  • Do you plan on utilizing B*?
  • Which creditors pull only TU or EQ?
  • Which creditors will close accounts due to adding too many new TL's?
  • Who will start you with larger limits that may be matched by subsequent approvals? (with that in mind which card would you apply for first?)
  • etc.
