I have a couple charge offs on my credit report that will drop off in less than 4 months. I want to pay them because after going through old boxes, I found some billing statements so I know the charges they are reporting are accurate and mine. How can I pay it without resetting the clock and they end up staying for another 7 years?

Paying does not reset the clock. If they are charged off, the OC probably will not accept payment.

One or more people here have probably had experience with the creditors to which you are referring. If you feel okay naming them, you may get some more specific advice on what others found effective/ineffective.

I tried with GE, Citi, Discover, Bank of America and HSBC to get them to recall chargeoffs and settle with them. None were open to it.

GE and BOA. They didn't sell the debt, they just charged it off. That's why I wanted to pay them. I don't need them to delete or anything because they will be gone in less than four months anyway. I just wanted to clear my conscience of it since I now know I didn't finish paying them. I want to contact them to at least offer to pay in full but I don't want it to bite my credit report in the butt. LOL! Otherwise, I'll donate the money to some charities that has special meaning to me.

it could reset it legally plus update the tl to make it look more like a current co than it is

Give it a try if you want. They will most likely update their accounts which will temporarily have a negative impact on your FICO scores until it drops off, but it does not reset the reporting clock.

It can lower the scores with an update, but it does not reset the clock since he is going to pay it in full.

With the conflicting info, I'm getting worried about trying. Never mind the big banks, they did take taxpayer bailout money after all. I'm giving the full amount to charity. It's not a lot but the charities will put the money to better use. $234 & $326

That's the best plan if you want to free your conscience. It's not worth messing with something that is going to fall off in 4 months. BTW, dispute it as obsolete with TU now and with EX and EQ in a month or two to see if you can get it off early.

I missed the part about him paying in full.. but I agree with you last post to try going the obsolete route.

IMO you should just leave them alone and let them fall off paying them will only have negative affects on your report and why would you want that? Clear your conscious by vowing to never again accumulate debts that you cant pay.

If they are going to drop off why would you pay those bottom feeders a dime??? :dntknw::dntknw:

Resist the urge... If you want to do something dispute them as obsolete.

the ones I was talking about are still with the OCs, they never sold them to JDBs or transferred them to outside collections. But I've already decided to just give the money to charity.
