Planning to wander over to Macon some time this week to see it....

I am glad that it is good. I don't know if I could bare the inevitable "Into Dorkness" puns that would arise if it were bad..

Yes, 2 evil villains.

Villain # 2 is a father.
I loved how the daughter of the father was the mother of "someone's" son.

Even more weird, when I first saw her, I thought it was the character of Dr. Elizabeth Dehner. The resemblance is uncanny. I don't know, maybe they intended that.

Like I said, I didn't see any of the trailers...or rather I didn't really *watch* the trailers. So when I saw her in the movie (before they identified who she was) I thought for sure that is who she was and that Gary Mitchell was going to show up....maybe as the bad guy.

I knew going in who the villian and the mother was and i still loved it. Peter Weller can still act after all these years and he does an amazing job as being the second villian. Took me a minute to realize who it was but after hearing the voice, who can forget RoboCop...LOL.

They did a number on the Klingons also. Having watched pretty much all TOS episodes I remember what the Klingons looked like. AND having watched all of the TNG episodes seeing the Klingons was kind of a mix between the two. They are much more evil looking int he movie than in either series, which, FWIW, they should be in that time period.

Cumberbatch did an amazing job for the character that he played. You can try and compare the two actors, but you won't get anywhere. Each one played him their own way and I think Cumberbatch did a better job just because of how straight he played him while still being evil at the same time.

I'm surprised that when they finally got to the backstory of how he got there they didn't go into more detail or mention the name of any "ships" that they were found on. THAT would have been cool and really tied everything together.

With that said though, if they keep going in the direction they are going in this "timeline" I don't know if I will be a big fan of it. The new ship that was supposedly built is made for war. Yes, the Klingons and Federation were at war for awhile, but the direction they are going makes it seem like the Federation started it and WANTED it...not to keen on that.

In the end, a really good movie and they even managed to get a nurse name drop in there with some very minor backstory to it. THAT was pretty cool!

Cumberbatch was magnificent. I liked how the story was redone. Seeing the relationships develop was nice; Spock and Kirk switching endings was well done.

Thought the gratuitous lingerie scene was overly forced. C'mon.

Except that Cumberbatch is of the wrong ethnic group and about 10 years too young for the part. (then again, his predecessor in the part was also of the wrong ethnic group, but at least closer in appearance and age)

I'm not taking away from his acting, which was good....I just think picking a 36 year old Caucasian to play the part of a 45-50 year old Indian/West Asian was not in keeping with ST canon.

But then again, Hollywood whitewashing is nothing new.

 but James T in bed with 2 friends was 'A Okay' Right? Hmmmm.

I take it you never watched the original series...........................

And don't forget the whole alternate time line thingy. Theoretically, nothing in TOS every happened, and ergo Cumberbatch's character is now the "original" one.

No....he was put in a sleeper ship 300 years before the timeline was changed....therefore, he would remain the same since the alternate timeline didn't affect him other than someone else found him a few years earlier, he still would have been the same age when he went in and came out of the sleeper ship.

Oh, and TOS was NOT buffoonish. :beee:
Unless you consider most television shows from that era buffoonish. The acting was similar to other shows of the day.

We are dealing with another era of acting style, laughable now, but common then....not to mention over the top sexist.

OK, I'll give you that HE stayed the same, but everything that happened once he was discovered has not since all the events have been changed. Ergo, you can surmize that in a way he is a "new" old version of himself. However, unless they manage to work him back into the next movie we will never know based on what we saw at the end of this one.

I consider it horrendously silly, but I can't stop watching. Just started watching this year, though, so I see it from a whole different perspective. You're right: such was TV of the day. Watching Knight Rider today is sad, but back then I lived for it.

I find it hilarious that EVERY episode, the innocence and nobility won out despite the foolishness of continuously underestimating the evil intentions of others.

Having said that, I agree with you: I prefer it to the borderline misogyny of the original Shatner series. It's also cool to be able to see a female captain in the Voyager branch. And I do REALLY like the reboot.

TV today sucks...
