I had an interview this morning for a staff position on my university campus, and got the call this afternoon that I am in the top 3. Second/final interview is Friday morning. Today was just with the department director, Friday is with the entire team. At this rate, I will probably know whether I've got the job by Friday afternoon. Fingers crossed!

The interview went well, I think! Now, thinking optimistically, a negotiation question. I know the salary I can't go below. If their offer is below that, do I immediately counter, or say I need to think about it, for form's sake?

If it were me, and I knew I could not ever accept their offer I would counter offer at that time. If they come back firm and won't go high enough to hit your bottom line, I would be honest and tell them that it is just not where you need it to be. There is no point delaying everything if you know you can't take it.

Remember, if you are asked what you would take always go a bit higher than you'd like (and research what the position pays in your area and stay within that range) that way you have room to negotiate if needed.

This. You can always go lower, but you can never go higher.

Giraffy, it is destiny. And just think, when you move up to Oregon (you are coming, right!?) we can be in-person BFF's.

I'm pretty sure she's moved to Chicago or something.

Well, I didn't get it...BUT.

The department director told me that part of the reason they went with someone else is because there is another position coming open next week that she thinks I would be an even better fit for...honestly, it sounds like exactly the position I had hoped to move into from this one.

It's in a different department so it's not *quite* a gimme (have to impress another team), but a) the applicant pool should be much smaller, b ) I personally know one of the people in that department already and c) come on, personal recommendation from the first director??
