I was just scheduling a trip to one of TX's sprawling but small cities and the Hilton Ambassador Suites, where I usually stay, was quoting $330 a friggin night. Last time I stayed there in Jan the prices were about $120.

I could see it in Dallas. Maybe.

I chose another place.

They probably have an event of some kind going on in town. Why are you going there? If there is any specific reason, you probably aren't the only one.

If you don't have to specifically be there that week, just call them up, ask them if there is anything going on in town, and see if you can't get them to tell you when a better and cheaper time to book is.

One card you can play is that you can call one day around noon to 2pm and ask to speak to a manager or sales director. Back your self up by having looked for the place on Hotwire and Hotels.com and see if they are willing to work with those scumbags at all.. tell them that you have a budget you have to keep to, or else you will have to advance purchase through hotwire. Then try asking if you can just arrange to purchase the room at what they would have offered it to Hotwire for. They might say no. But on general, any hotel who would rather have you book through those jerks rather then booking with them is probably not someone you really /want/ to be lodging with..

I would advise being absolutely sure of the dates you will be staying and offer to make it an advance purchase with your credit card and agree to wave cancellation. Knowing for a fact you are going to get someones money tends to make you a little more willing to broker a deal with them...

No. I don't like hotwire/hotels.com/expedia/travelocity/etc/etc... Yes, I have good reasons, no I'm not going say what they are. Anyway, The worst that can happen is that the sayd no, so it's worth trying.
