We are using the HIPAA program for my wife - She has 6 accounts on her report, 2 of which report as unpaid and we had no prior knowledge of until we went to apply for a home loan. The amounts are $127 and $156. Both accounts we're most likely billed to her while she was still a dependent of her parents and they failed to pay in a timely manner. This has happened before.

My understanding of the steps before me are as follows:

  • Opt Out - Complete!
  • Delete Old Addresses/Erroneous Names - In Progress (Disputed initiated electronically for TransUnion & Equifax, Experian letter prepared)
  • Send Pre-HIPAA Medical Dispute Letter

After that, I will proceed with each account depending on the CRA and CA's response. I'll come back to update my progress.

Let me know if I seem to have anything wrong.

Ok. Experian is sent. I didn't send it CM - I probably should have though. How much time should I give them? Also, if TU and EQ change the addresses in a timely manner, can I proceed to the next steps while still waiting for EX?

Ok. What about EX, how long is too long?

?? By the time you get your response from Eq and TU you should know if Ex has deleted your old addresses, if you haven't heard from Ex by then, or haven't seen the address deletions via Ex back door, you can THEN send the dispute letter to Ex.

Ok. EQ address removals were approved. Should I remove her maiden name as well? I didn't have the option before online since her maiden name was the primary, and married was an AKA. Now they are reversed, but I feel guilty clicking "this is not my former name" because it's a lie.

We've only been married for a year, so these bad accounts will most likely be in her maiden name. Can that help make them disappear?

You can TRY to get her maiden name off, but it may not be possible. To do so you will have to provide a copy of her drivers license with her correct name and a copy of the report with the "maiden name" circled in red. You should also indicate that you ( she) is concerned about identity theft, ( if appropriate you can say that the maiden name is a very common name and therefore vulnerable)

I think I'll let sleeping dogs lie with her maiden name. She has some positive TLs there too. However, one of the CAs has started calling for her, she lets it go to voicemail every time. I'm correct that she should continue to do so and NOT speak with them, yes?

If so, I'll just block their number from her phone.

Good news! I sent TU and EQ letter end of March - TU has deleted all disputed accounts. I am still waiting for final say from EQ and will be mailing the initial medical dispute letter to EX tomorrow.

The calls stopped, so I have not sent any letters to any CA's at this point.

My understanding is that if I have the same luck from EQ and EX, I'm done, yes? I'm hoping that I continue to have them deleted, but am prepared to move further if necessary.
