So I was on a roll with Uline, Reliable, and a couple of others, so I figured I'd give Gemplers a try. The lady called today and said she couldn't find any credit info on us and asked me to prepay for the first few times. I told her to cancel the order and she said ok. A little bummed.

CreditRN,

Cal back that department (I assume is The Credi Dept) and asked if they will reconsider (recon) but before you do, find out the following:

Who does Gempler report to?

Pull your 3 biz credit reports (Equifax, Experian, and D&B)

Do you have any TL's showing? If so, how many?

Biz credit is very similar to personal credit in that you need to know where you stand before you request credit terms.

If you don't have any TL's showing yet it is not the end of the world. Wait until your other creditors report and submit again.

Also, please consider doing a biz secured loan, even if it is for $200.00 dlls, Itwill do wonders for your credit. (Read my post on this subject)

These secured loans you speak of are not as easy to come by as you make it seem.. You cant get one for $200 either. Most places have a min. amount and as you know many of them make you PG the loan and pull your credit. So if your going to PG the loan just get a business credit card that reports. Also if they report it as secured it doesn't really help much. And many small businesses just don't have $5k+ to throw in the bank and the money may be better used for the business then trying to build credit.

I always tell people worry about starting/running your business first then the business credit. In this day and age you can't start a business on business credit. If you need funding you will need good personal credit or just cash. If your using personal credit then building business credit isn't a priority and may never become one.

Ask the lady if she could divulge who they report to.

Have you ever viewed your report? Go to google and type in DNB iupdate and register. It will show you a basic listing of your report... chances are the report may be incomplete or in a "DS" status. You can elect to submit a financial statement. That'll help remove that rating and in addition provide more information. Though, only do that if you could show profitable growth this past 12 months.

You should never submit your financials to DNB. There is no reason for them to have them. If a creditor wants them you can't send them directly to the creditor. None of my companies have a rating with DNB and it hasn't effected me in obtaining credit at all.

I was curious, when you say don't have a rating did you mean you're sitting in a "--" rating? If so, you're right that never has an effect on you. A few things can cause that blank rating; something as simple as missing company history or percentage of ownership can cause that. Not arguing at all, just curious what you meant by they didn't have a rating?

Doesn't really matter what it says -- or DS as long as it has the business name and basic info that's all that matters. Even the paydex score is pointless its for your info. Most companies just pull the trade info and generate their own scores. DNB uses a lot of these "extras" to sell products to businesses and make money.. You don't see all these extra things on Experian or Equifax and that's the way it should be.

I placed an order with Gemplers yesterday. Recceived a call today indicating it was on hold for pre-payment. The lady I spoke with was very professional and polite. I indicated I was not wanting to pre-pay. She asked me who the AP contact for my company is, I answered myself. She placed me on hold for a few minutes and returned to the line - we'll invoice you for this order. I asked if this would set up open account status with Gemplers, she said yes.

This is why its important to answer the phone or call some one back when they call. Some creditors just want to see the business is active and legit.
