Always wondered. If someone wins 1 million on a game show, how much would they actually take home?

I mean like after taxes and stuff?

This question has bugged me since I was a kid. :(

I was talking to someone on our project that won 100k on a game show years ago. She said the take home then was about 40k. I think she had fed and state taxes taken.

~35% in federal taxes

in Illinois 5% in state taxes

so for me (no local income taxes..just the really high state income tax) it would be ~600k
