Just curious...obviously we wouldn't share personally identifying information but how careful should we be about how much information we share regarding the circumstances of a particular situation? Dollar amounts, OC's, CA's, etc?
If these scum bags were to lurk here or even join and post, wouldn't they be required by law to notify the board that it "is an attempt to collect a debt, yadda, yadda, yadda"???
Do CA's, JDB, Others Lurk Here???

Yep. A Collector with the screen name Maestro888 tried to lead me in the wrong direction. I'll link the thread for you. You'll notice his name badge has a disclosure that says "collector," he did NOT have that tag yet, when I was dealing with him...Long story short, had I listened to him, I would have missed out. These guys were totally in the wrong and settled the day before I was set to file. I was able to put a nice down payment on a 2010 Corolla last August because of the settlement.

I was previously a debt collector when I joined this board, and I got a bit of flack when I announced it. However, I've changed employment recently and am no longer associated with that CA. That said, the agents are not scumbags themselves; they're people just like you that have bills to pay and need to earn money. The agencies themselves, however, might be a different story.

I'm sure some to lurk around, and its always a good idea to annoymize your posts a bit. Also remember the way the CA's make money is in bulk so they have tons of accounts they are collecting on so its probably not a 2 sec process for them to look at your posts with a little bit of info and match it to a collection in their system so they can call you up and say "hey you said on CB that you knew this debt was yours, so pay up!" but I suppose if they tried hard enough they might be able to with enough info.
To me one of the best parts about CB is the pure fact that its all about being educated, if you know the federal and your states laws regarding debt and collections you are able to protect yourself. Consumers being educated is perfectly fair and not a whole lot they can do about it. Many times the CA's do depend on people lacking the knowledge and making knee jerk reactions out of fear or implied guilt, so in the end they have something to fear.
Sure there are some tricks and technicality's that are discussed here that can help in specific situations but its not like the CA's are unaware of this... I'm sure many times they know they did not respond to a CRA in-time or they know that they have to watch out for a dispute letter followed by cra dispute, its not like many of these ideas are brand new. Jack Attack, its their own damn fault for reporting information incorrectly if they always reported information 100% correct to the letter of the law this would not work near as well if at all.
One last thing, from what I've heard/read collection agencies tend to have pretty high turn over rates. So I think the fact that there is some level of constant rotation how many employees are really going to pursue this in their off time? Unless of course they are having the same issues, because in the end they are people and just because you work at a CA doesn't mean you have perfect debt history.
