one of the fantastic debt collectors of the world i mean jdbs has told me that they will not validate the debt for me, unless i seek legal counsel becasue i did not respond to there written notice which i truly never received.
file a complaint with the BBB and the FTC.
what does your state law cover?
in AZ you can send them a DV request anytime, and they have to stop until they validate - none of this 30 day crap.

What state do you live in?
How long since you've made a payment to the account?

state is CO, sol is 5 years, it has been 5.7 years.
Colorado SOL for a credit card is three (3) years. If you live in Colorado this debt has been legally uncollectible for almost three years now....

If possible I would contact an attorney or take the time to do the appropriate research, preferably an attorney if you have the wherewithal. I guess if one wanted to be "technical" they can "collect" on the account, but in terms of legal recourse there is nothing they can do if the debt is outside of the statute of limitations (wage garnishment, liens, etc.)
Collectors are professionals at trying to mess with your head/threaten/manipulate you into paying them (As you can imagine especially the ones who are calling you.)
If they "don't want to prove it without speaking with your attorney" that is basically translation for "We know we can't do sh*t in terms of collecting on this debt, but we are going to be a pain about it because we are assuming you are ignorant to the law. If you have an attorney we really know that you know we can't do sh*t."
Collection agencies (especially junk debt buyers) DEPEND ON IGNORANCE! DON"T let them fool you.

dispute with credit bureau 2 days after you mail it, if they verify the debt with them then send them an intent to sue letter.
and sue them.
