bil's gf she works a graveyard shift at a nursing home, she is a CNA (works 10 pm to 6am and sometimes 6pm to 6am) anyway bil and gf come over to watch hockey, bil and dh always drink beer during hockey. I am not a big drinker and usually won't have anything till I know both my dd are home for the night etc and I don't care for beer if I have anything it is a fru fru drink.
Anyway gf about 7ish starts having some beers between 7 and 9 I say maybe 4 to 6 beers (we did eat dinner before).
I guess I just find it strange you would have some drinks before going to work and just a few hours before going to work.
Am I out of the loop? Maybe some employees have drinks on their lunch hour.

A couple drinks shouldn't be too bad, but if you're on the half dozen in a 2 hour range just before work, it's likely to impair you as you start your job an hour later. Plus you're likely to smell like a brewery no matter how many Altoids you take.

If the OP really loves sweet-tasting drinks, you need to try my famous "Dessert in a Glass"
shot of 43 (vanilla liqueur)
shot of Bailey's (cream liqueur)
2 oz or so heavy cream or half and half
a little juice from Maraschino cherry jar
Shake it on up, and pour into rocks/old-fashioned glass.
Splash of grenadine.
Garnish with cherry.
Enjoy.

Even giving that girlfriend the most optimistic metabolism, she still under the influence for about half of her shift.

I have had drinks at lunch..but its pretty normal where I come from...have never known why its pretty much taboo in the US
When my dad was in Germany on buisness about 10 years ago, companies were starting to get away from letting thier employees have a beer or two during thier lunch break. But one of the German guys told him that most places had a policy that if you come back from lunch drunk, you're out of a job. So, 10 years ago there may have been an issue.
I get the fact that lunch breaks and drinking can and are different in Europe than the US. But all it take is one or two brazen idiots to ruin a good thing. I can't see myself going to work after having one drink, let alone having a drink on my lunch hour.

This policy would be because the Europeans actually expect you to exercise some restraint and act like a responsible adult. I doubt this has changed whether it's been 10 or 20 years. They don't need to give lectures on how to behave since it is known and expected that "yes you may consume alcohol, but if you get drunk, you will be fired".
Kind of how every drivers knows (in Germany) that if there is a Stau (a traffic jam, if you will) that "Each One - Lets One" meaning each driver will allow one car to merge in front of them, thereby making traffic go FASTER! I wish, pray and hope that Americans will learn this one day. Such a simple lesson, but apparently just way above the comprehension of my fellow citizens.
I miss my home world sometimes.

The only time I've ever had a drink before work was when I waited tables. For a regular job, I would never consider it.
Same here, when I bartended. I've never had a drink before, or during (lunch hour) for my grown-up jobs. I don't normally stop at one drink...
