Looking for some expert advice!

My son is in college and has a Bank of America card with a $700 limit (7 month history), AU on six year old Discover ($6000), and recently added as an AU on Amex Gold with a 23 year history.

We checked his score on Credit Karma and it shows 735. He has limited personal income , but it seems like Amex is being very generous right now, What is the best course of action to get him backdated? Do we apply for a Zinc card even though it will probably not be backdated or continue building his credit history?

All comments appreciated :D

Since AmEx will probably use the same hard pull for apps on the same day, have him go for a "better" card first.
If that is denied, then apply for Zync.
Backdating Zync in the same family appears much easier, especially if addresses are the same.

How about this?

My mom has a Amex Plat for her small business (she is the owner and personally guarantees it). I'm already an AU on that card, but it doesn't report.

I talked to her earlier this week and she's willing to (if it helps me) get a personal card.

If she gets a personal card will they back date it? Then, I could be added as an AU on that one? It goes back about 10 years.

Does her Business Platinum have a Member Since 2001?
If so, any personal card should also carry that year.

Yes it does. I talked to her today and this week we're going to app for a personal card. If anyone has an opinion on the best Amex card to go with, I'd appreciate the advice. Her scores are in the low 800's. I'll give it a bit and then we'll add me as an AU.

Please keep us updated on the outcome, I'm also interested.

César :)

OK, it's been a busy week and I just got off the phone with my mom. She said to go ahead and apply. I'm waiting to get my parent's income from their 2010 tax returns (she wasn't sure if they've even filed yet) just in case. She said she a credit card (not charge) and no AF. Any suggestions?

If you want an American Express Credit Card, then many here like "Blue from American Express." It has good rewards and no annual fee.

I had no problem at all backdating my Zync card

Were you backdating to your own prior account or to an AU account? I'm wondering what might have been different about your situation. When did you succeed at this?

Does backdating work with Bank issued AMEX cards or only with "official" AMEX?

For example, I was AU on my ex-wife's Bank issued AMEX (FIA Card Services) until we were separated. The card was opened in '06 and I was removed as AU in '08. She still has the TL open. It reports closed on my EX and TU, but it still appears as an open TL on my EQ, $0 balance/$3800 limit, pays as agreed, last reported in '08.

Will this boost my chances when applying for an AMEX? ...or get me backdated if I am approved?

This was done in October 2010. I was backdating to an AU AMEX Gold card I was on for a few years starting back in 1994.

The only main difference I can think of why AMEX wasn't able to deny my backdating request maybe due to the fact that I have been an AU on 2 more AMEX accounts since 2007 one of which was a gold card. when the gold card was due to expire they sent me out a replacement card and my replacement cards member since date actually said "94" I was totally shocked. So when I got my own zync card I just told them i was a member since "94" and they can just look at my gold card on file and see my member since date and the CSR said no problem and changed my member since date while I was still on the line with her and had me refresh my browser so I could see the change was made!

P.s. When I originally got my new AMEX card with the "94" member since date I called to have the date reflected on my reports but the CSR said I couldn't but if and when I get my own AMEX it would be no problem...

Hope any of this helps, the bottom line is that it can definitely be done!!!!

I had a corporate gold card back in 2000. I had some financial trouble back then had to end up closing the account (It was closed by them). Fully paid off however.

I just now repaired my credit enough to re-apply for an Amex Zync and an Blue Cash card. As of today, both are reporting and have been backdated to 2000.

Woot amex!

Forget Amex cards, we should get this whole thread backdated, say to 1973 or something :D

Backdating win!

Summary: Had Amex in college, 1990, closed who knows when. Still reporting on my Experian with a date of status of 11/01, set to fall off 11/11.

Received a new Amex green a few weeks ago that arrived with a "Member since" date of 2011.

Called CSR, was put on hold, told they were unable to locate my account.

Called card replacement services, was flat out told that it wasn't possible to backdate.

Called credit bureau services (the number on the Experian report), told they couldn't locate my old account but helpfully offered to delete my 21 year old positive tradeline. (I declined.)

Emailed customer service through their website, got a response that it WAS possible to backdate and that I needed to call the number on the back of my card.

Today: Called customer service again, first rep couldn't find anything, supervisor couldn't find anything but suggested I write a letter to executive customer service and include a copy of my Experian report.

Then, emailed back to customer service through the website and asked if there was a specific department or individual to whom I could be referred.

Received an email back from customer service within 30 minutes stating that no, there was no one else, but that the rep would put in the request and I should receive a new card within 9 to 12 business days.

Logged into the website a few hours later and saw my "Member since 1990" at the top of the page.

Now...hoping that it will report on my CRs as opened in 1990. Still...I think I am about 80% of the way there!

Called up AMEX with my Dad and asked them to back date his recently opened Blue card. The first representative said they could find no record of this and if the old account was closed it could not be done.

I asked to speak to their supervisor. The supervisor said that there are records that go back further that the phone representatives cannot access. It took him about five minutes of being on hold and then he came back and asked us what year we thought his original card was opened in to the best of our knowledge. He said this would be used to locate the old account. We indicated it was 1969. He stated he would submit the request for further research and if they were able to confirm it that he should receive a new card within 9 to 12 business days with the new member since date. We logged into his account this morning and the date now shows 1969! We then added me as an Authorized User, so I will report back once it shows up on my credit report.

Thanks for all the help!

Hi Menta33!

I'll need to get my own card first...

With a BK Ch 7 discharged May 10, I'm not sure how long that will take.

Perhaps a Zync with a secured line?

Anyone have experience getting an AMEX with BK on your credit report?

I wish. Although I've never app'd for one. I still have an unpaid state tax lien showing on my EX (deleted from the other two but stupid EX won't budge). Even though my BK7 is now over 7 yrs old, I think the lien would be a showstopper. I should have that deleted off there by summer

Will AMEX even permit you to be an AU with that recent BK on your report?

Well the screen on their website said they were mailing the card out, so we will see if I actually get it or not.

I got my AU card from my father's account today. The member since date on his card is 1978 but mine says 2011. I have my own Amex cards which have member since dates of 2005.

I called and spoke with three different CSR's at the number on the back of the card asking for the AU card to be backdated to 1978 but they all said that AU cards cannot be dated to the original cardholders date. The third rep did offer to backdate my AU card to 2005 to match my own cards.

So, what are the magic words to get my AU card backdated? Do I have to wait for a while before asking?

I think a lot depends on the CSR you get.
Some have had luck talking with the Card Replacement department, and asking for a new card reflecting the age of your being an AU on an older card.
It may also depend on which card is being backdated.

The card I'm trying to backdate is AMEX green. I don't think I want to call again today, but I'll try to card replacement dept tomorrow or Monday.

Menta33 got results by asking for a supervisor, you could also try that.
