Hey gang.

Alot of great ideas on this thread.

The water tank heater won't work for me, as I live in an apt with a natural gas flame heater, and you have to manually relight the pilot.

My girlfriend and I got a skype account, and a local phone number. We can make unlimited outgoing and incoming calls anywhere in the US for about 60 bucks per year.

We use this phone when our peak minutes are on our cell phones, so we don't run out of minutes.

I got the sprint sero employee referral plan for my girlfriend and I, the plan is 30 bucks per month for 500 minutes, free nights and weekends, and free internet.

I called to disable the text messaging on both accounts, so that we don't get hit with 15 cent dings everytime a friend sends us a text.

Then I called again, and got them to stack employer benefits on top of our deal. I save 27 percent off my bill because of who i work for, she saves 11 percent. Both of our bills are a bit under 30 bucks a month including all the taxes.

We live in buffalo for now, so we insulated all the windows in the apt, to keep out the drafts. I keep the heat at 60 degrees, and shut it off at night. Its quite cold but we wear hooded sweatshirts, and we don't freeze to death.

I was shopping at the fancy grocery store, and paying 89 bucks per week. I started shopping at superwalmart, and buying the walmart brand foods, and my bill is now 45 a week.

I was paying 125 per month insuring my cars with allstate. Now its 72 dollars per month with geico.

I consolidated all my debt into a 0 percent american express credit card, and will pay that off in full before we move west (moving to az this summer).

I paid off my truck, and that saved me 208 per month. I put that money towards credit card debt.

It's a given that the a/c takes up the majority of your electric bill..which I hate! It's just way too hot and humid here (I'm in Florida) to turn it off. Of course, in the winter months, we keep it pretty high and even turn it off, which is great!

Some ways to save money..

We have a 5 gallon water jug that we use to put all loose change in. Every single day, we put coins in there. It really adds up!

We also shop at Sams and get most of our groceries in bulk..this saves us a GREAT deal of money, every single month. A lot of the things we purchase once, we don't need to get until several months later..so buying in bulk really does come in handy. We also go to the Farmers Market every Saturday and I can go in there with $20 and come home with a fridge FULL of fruits and veggies.

The dryer also sucks up a lot of electricity. If you have an old dryer, do consider replacing it with an energy star machine..will definitely save you money in the long run. If you sence your dryer is taking long to dry..you might need a new one.

Using ceiling fans can make you feel significantly cooler, faster. So definitely use those..not pushing your a/c harder.

Making sure your windows, doors and all vents (from the roof to the outside) is properly sealed. Inspect all trim at least once or twice a year..if you see that it's cracked or broken, go to homedepot, get new trim/weather stripping and replace it. Keeping a tight seal on your home will definitely ensure the cool air is staying in and hot air is not coming in.

If you haven't done so in awhile, get your insulation in your attic inspected. Making sure your attic is properly insulated will save you money, for sure.

I generally get about 5 a month from Pinecone. I <3 that site. I'm going to check out the other two sites you mentioned. Extra cash is always good.

Grocery Bill:
When I go grocery shopping, I try to buy my meats in bulk (if price is right) or buy double if sale price is right.

When I make meatloaf, I make two and slice and freeze one; chili, spagetti, soups...I make double and freeze individual size servings (reusable freezer to microwave bowls are a great deal if you buy bulk) for lunches; if I cook a roast, I buy a little bit bigger one than we need and tear to shreds the left over portion, make a thick gravy out of the drippings and freeze (kids love this over potatoes).

Unless name brand cereal and side dish items are at a really great price (cheaper than store brand or generics),
I don't buy name brand (with exception of Campbell's tomatoe soup, and only tomatoe). My kids have learned that they don't have the choice to be that choosey - no ifs/ands/or buts! And, since I don't cook foods that only I like, my family has learned to eat what I do cook. I will be d*mned if I will cook three dishes for one meal!!!

I also make a two week menu plan for all meals and snacks. I buy only that that is on my shopping list and, nothing more!
If I buy chips and other snacks, the kids know how much they are allowed to eat in a day and, they have adjusted just fine.
Koolaid and homemade iced tea (generic tea bags, of course) is much cheaper than soda and, we only use half of the sugar it calls for...

I do the bulk of my shopping at Shop-N-Sav. I have easily seen a 50% savings over shopping at Giant Eagle! We don't do more than one run a week for bread, milk and eggs and, again, we only buy what is on the list.

Other Shopping:
If we go to WalMart, we have a list of what we are after and, we only go in those departments (avoid the toy isles, except for holiday and birthday shopping, unless my kids have their own "earned" money to spend - believe it or not, kids don't have to have everything their friends have to be happy, they just like you to think that...LOL).

I also buy stuff like my ink cartridges, printer paper and other supplies at WalMart because they are so much cheaper than Staples or Office Depot!

Utilities: I just did this stuff!
*I called the phone company and went down to just local (with privacy guard) and am now using Skype Unlimited for long distance ($40 a year for unlimited LD) - about $40 cheaper a month - what a savings!!!
*The cable company - I had called them to have everything but my internet shut off, informing them that we were going to dish to save money and, low and behold, they gave me a new package that saves us $30 a month for 12 months AND I get faster internet service to boot!
*Cell phones are a neccessity in our home because of my husband's work schedule, the kids sports activities, the fact that my daughter just turned 14 and is now going everywhere with her friends (and their parents, of course) and, my health. We just added a third line to our contract but, when we did, we reduced the number fo minutes (and, yes, she will lose her phone if she causes us to go over) and, went to more text messages (since that is how my husband and I communicate most on our phones). We also did away with the roadside assistance since we have a newer model car. We will be saving about $20 a month, even with the new line. Not sure how long that will be since our son will be 13 in Nov. and was told he gets his phone then but, am going to start him off with a Virgin Mobile to test his level of responsibility (it really is questionable at this time).
So far, $90 in saving each and every month!!!
*I have switched from running the A/C 24 hours this summer to running it only on days when it is over 78 degrees and, shut it off at night, opening the windows and turning on the ceiling fans. I bought white poster board to cover the windows where the sun shines in in the afternoon, when it is the hottest. I attach it to the curtain rods using shower curtain hooks that are open ended. Yes, it is added work to move put them up and take them off everyday but, it helps keep the house cooler!
*I run the dishwasher ONCE a day, after everyone else is in bed (they do let off more heat than most people realize). We DON'T wash the car once a week like some people do and, when we do, we do it in a hurry! With exception of my husband, the rest of us all shower in the evening so, I am going to talk to him about changing his time so we can test out the "shutting off the hot water heater" plot in order to cut there!

Savings:
I haven't done this yet but, (this thread has given me the inspiration) since we have just implemented a household budget, instead of using the differences between the budgeting amount and the actual costs of things as "extra cash" we are going to open a new savings account and put the "extra cash" into it! We will then apply it to an outstanding debt each time it reaches $200. Since we have budgeted in payments each month on these debts, they will be extra payments and help pay them down even faster!

Thank you to whoever (I can't remember that many posts back) started this thread...It really has been an inspiration and informative thread!

I didn't see anybody post this yet, so I thought I'd add it.

Go through your house and check out which companies make all the products you use. Then, write those companies (emails are usually fine) praising their products and asking for coupons. Most of them will be happy to oblige either with coupons or free products. Sometimes the coupons are small, but still helpful. Other times they make the products free. We got a free 200 ct. bottle of One-a-Day vitamins, for example.

I know most of this has been said, but....

-Buy generic when you can. I especially like the Target/Archer Farms products--I think they're better than the brand names, and other generic/store brands have gotten a lot better over the years.

-Sam's Club/Costco for non-perishables (paper/sanitary products). You save a lot in the long run, and if you and a friend will both go, maybe go in on a membership together, and just go together. One of my friends and I used to make a day of it. And for a while in our area, the membership was worth it just for the gas prices.

-Forget the A/C all together when you can. I have a couple fans, but if you're in the right area or climate, you may not need those.

-Netflix! I love Netflix. I have the $40 plan, but get 5 movies at a time, and end up going through about 30 a month. Compared to $4 a pop at Hollywood, that's a huge difference! I also don't buy DVDs usually because I can just rent it again.

-When you go to the store, MAKE A LIST. WRITE IT DOWN. STICK TO IT. (That way you know something's out of place when you end up with $100 of chocolate and no milk. :D )

I have found I save ALOT of money when I avoid Walmart like the plague

Sorry GEORGE :aggressive:

I save a lot of money by buying my groceries at WalMart. A box of cereal, for example, is about a dollar cheaper at Walmart for the same brand and size. I buy the WalMart brand of coffee, which saves me about $3....and I drink a lot of coffee. I save more than the $50 suggested in this thread by shopping at WalMart for groceries compared to my local supermarket which is the only game in town.

But you are right, you have to be focused or you will discover things you think you need but which are really just "wants."

I know what you mean. Fortunantly for us, our local grocery store rebuilt and its massive...they are cheaper than walmart now and we avoid seeing/throwing extra things in the cart.

Our closest walmart is 20 miles away and in a busy tourist town so its not to hard to stay away

Ms. Lisa,

I know you posted this quite a while ago, but do you by any chance live close to Wisconsin Dells. If so, I can so relate with avoiding that Wal-Mart. I actually will drive one town away during tourist season to shop.

Redbox. You can find tons of codes for free rentals and once you use those up, the rentals are only $1 a night.

I haven't done this myself, but if you're a gardener, you might try splitting some of your plants and selling them at the farmers market. My neighbor did this and made $400 in 3 weeks.

Okay, I posted this in another thread, but it sounds right up the alley for this one...And I love all the suggestions that don't make me look like a Depression era survivor or a cheapskate. And I didn't even think about Starbucks...I pass at least 5 on my way to work, and I take the train...

My neighbor used to be a drag racer, and his favorite line was "If you think in grams, the pounds come off." In other words, change a lot of little things and it will add up. Here's what I did, and I'm almost out of debt (except student loans).

To be blunt, strech your dollar where you can, and it pays off. (Do I sound like a broken record to anyone else?)

Buy in bulk...seriously, eliminating trips to the store not only saves gas, but also wear and tear on your car and "extra" charges for impulse buys. I admit that I'm a sucker for the registar displays...and soda at the gas station.

CFLs or Compact Flourecent Bulbs...yeah yeah, they save the eniviroment, whatever. Just replacing my porch lights and frequently used lamps really helped on my power bill...so I replaced every light over a few months. Sooo much easier than replacing them in the hard to reach sockets every few months...and I replaced them in '04, only had two burn out so far...And vacuum your 'fridge coils, sounds stupid, but really, when was the last time you did it? I thought so...guess what sucks up most of your electricity? Spring cleaning is coming. Oh, if it drops below 20 degrees, they take forever to turn on...my porch lights sometime stay on all day in the winter.

Good 'ole thermostat...my house has bad insulation, so this helps quite a bit. Just a couple degree helps, more if you can stand it. Turn it up (or down depending on the season) when you have company (trust me on that one). No, I don't need a coat, but I do wear a hoody (hoodie?) at night. Programable so it drops a few more while I'm sleeping under a down comforter.

Shaving...I used to use a Mach3, then the Fusion came out...an 8 pack of replacement blades costs $25??? That's just stupid. I switched to an old safety razor...get a better shave and just bought a 2 year supply of blades for 14 bucks with shipping. (I've cut myself twice in 4 months) They have forums with very proud members that will help get started. (I hear they're really good for shaving legs too, but very few women are willing to try...I guess that it would be intimidating. It's sounds weird, and will cost a bit up front, but is well worth it (I even enjoy it now).

Smoker? If so...quit. Okay, lets be realistic, it's hard, so in the meantime buy cartons (if you buy a pack every day it really adds up...remember the wear and tear too?) That alone saved me $40 a month plus gas (like I would walk that far)...then I would suggest generics...the taste may not be as good, but it's not the flavor that causes the addiction, now is it? (trust me, you adapt real fast when it's all you got...ever give back a bummed cig for being the wrong brand?)

Drinker? Especially happy hour drinkers...this adds up fast. Plus if you drive, it can get real 'spensive real fast.

Coupons? Go ahead and clip 'em...like most of these suggestions, it's a double whammy. Not only will you save a little coin, but you also are not spending money doing something else (I liked to distract myself back then, I was REALLY broke). You also find other versions of a product that might be cheaper/better.

Clean your car out...and keep the tires inflated to what the door says...Since you commute, at least get the best milage you can...might be time for a tune up/ air filter change. And for pete's sake...keep it washed...for that price, it should be pretty all the time...

Lunch...buying it at work gets pricey...bag it when you can...tastes better than what a 16 y/o makes on a fryer too.

Okay, this is all frugal stuff that everyone knows (but few actually do), but as long as you don't ACT like a cheapskate, you won't be mistaken for one. Besides, a buck here and a buck there...well, I have yet to find one that I can't spend

Have you tried a refi on the house? And there's always the obvious stuff like paying down the highest interest rate CC first. But everything else is a (hopefully minor) lifestyle change. And really look for a cheaper wireless provider, unless you get an awesome discount for bundling, you should be able to beat that. (I have a cell that is cheaper than home service (40/mo for unlimited minutes)...how sad is that? It's actually cheaper in my city to get high speed internet than dial up and home phone service.

As for the ROTH...personally, I'd keep paying it...compounded interest over decades should be better than a few bucks saved in the short term. I was a finance major, so I have to give Kudos for putting aside something every month...this habit WILL help you years from now, and I won't have to pay takes for your lack of planning either. Stopping this should be your last resort.

BTW...look for festivals and civic concert days...theres something every weekend in the summer, fun and free too. Take up running(okay, or jogging/brisk walking)...80 bucks for shoes can save you a lot of money down the road (and now too)...If you're like most Americans you probably have a little weight to lose...which will help your milage (and your lifespan), which will save you on gas, which means more money to pay down CC balances, which will free up more money to pay off the other cards...see how this all works out? There are so many insignificant things that can add up...

I can't believe this! Sendearnings and Inboxdollars just cut in HALF the amount they are paying us to take a survey! Did any of you get an email on that because I didn't! They are paying only .50 a survey now. Does anyone think 30 minutes of our time is worth .50? :D

What is going on with the climate of online surveys? They are all now wanting to pay less and less and switching over to sweeepstakes. Is the market getting saturated?

Out of all the sites I belong too, inbox is the only one that has cut survey payouts that much. Heck no it isn't worth it! Try the link in my siggy, that one is still paying more.

When the family goes out to eat--it's just a rule that we'll all order water--that cuts the bill $10+ bucks. You can grab a soda when you get home if you have to have it.
