So we went to the mall and I gave my boyfriend my card because I didn't feel like getting up he was just buying a sandwich. However after he got up I remembered the card I gave him has my pic on the front with me in pigtails I figured they'd never take it. He was back 5 minutes later with his sandwich .

My boyfriend is almost 6 ft tall and has black hair. I am little tiny girl with pigtails very obvious in the picture. And my card says see I'd on the back. I always thought that was my most secure card because of the pic I guess not

As long as you card is signed, that is all the ID they need. It is in violation of Visa/ Mastercard agreement with the merchants to ask for your ID.

Do they need ID to know his name isn't Jennifer and the signatures don't match?

Oh I see, the merchants here use the excuse "it just for your protection". It really is annoying and I too sometimes allow dh to use my card and he has to show id at the gas station.

Well....TECHNICALLY, it isa violation for them to condition the sale on showing ID. They can ask all they want but if they refuse to complete the transaction because the consumer refuses their request THEN it becomes a violation.

You do not have to show ID to use visa/ mastercard.

Look for hedge's Siggy. " I am not a thief, so I do not show ID"
Also there are a few threads about this

I think in the 10 yrs or so I've been using credit cards, I have only noticed one person even look at the signature on the back of the card to compare it to the signed receipt.

I just don't get how they could let him use my card when my pic was on the front unless they're afraid of a lawsuit from a cross dresser for discrimination.

I think we need side-by-side pics to properly evaluate the propriety, or lack thereof. ;)

The only merchant I've ever had decline a sale with an unsigned Visa/Mastercard is the United States Post Office. They will NOT accept any type of CC if it is not signed. You can only use your debit card unsigned when you use it as a debit card and have to input your pin number.

What is up with that? I've showed them my Driver's License with my signature on it for ID, and they still won't budge.

What if he had a card with his lovely girlfriend's photo on it to remind him of her? That's not that odd...is it?

Well what about if it's not signed and says "See ID" what is the responsibilities of the merchant then?

The question I have is why you wouldn't sign the back of your card? Even though most cashiers never look at it, as seen in this thread, I say it is more of a security risk not signing the back of the card.

I assume the OP had a card which the purpose of the photo is designed as, and advertised as, a security feature, not like a cap one card that you can put any picture on.

On more than one occasion, I have accidentally used my wife's card and signed on the receipt, and she has used my card and signed on the receipt. And these weren't additional cards either (and not joint CC accounts either). So I guess they don't verify the signature unless you have a transaction dispute.

This was an under $25 no signature swipe? They don't care - he has the card, they just need to swipe. No signature, no id needed. Some places the customer swipes the card and the cashier never sees it.
