I thought I remembered reading here years ago that retailers are not allowed to require ID for credit card purchases. It's getting out of hand here, one store even has a sign on their door that says ID is required. Is it against the retailer agreement with the CC for Visa and Mastercard? If so, what do you do about it? Do the CC's take action?

For those that READ the Agreement, they may request it but they cannot condition the sale upon presentation.

Personally, I have greater battles to fight than an event that, in my own fraud situation, could have prevented losses to creditors in the tens of thousands of dollars (actually more than $100K of the losses could have been prevented had ID been checked). I have a life and giving some clerk a hard time is not worth wasting my time over...nor am I so incensed that I want to waste time and gas to go to another store to purchase the same item(s).

That being said...if OP REALLY wants to chirp about it, there is a section of the forum dedicated to such nonsense...

I agree...I don't break the clerk's stones for asking...I am sure they are just doing what they are being told to do. I am not going to waste the time trying to "prove a point".

I had this happen this past weekend. Asked if I was paying debit or credit. I said credit. She asked for my ID. I asked her if I would have said debit if she would ask for ID. She said, no, you have a pin.! lol. WTH kind of reasoning is that? Same friggin card.

It kinda annoyed me esp cuz all of my info was in their system (was at a furniture store) and I had just used the same card there last weekend (debit, not credit) and NO ONE asked for ID then.

When run as credit.... you don't need to "know" anything extra. Say I lift your purse/wallet.... I find a CC and run it as credit. All I have to do is forge a signature. If I run it as debit, I would have had to know your PIN in addition to being stealthy enough to lift your purse/wallet. (So I would have to be psychic in addition to agile unless you're purple enough to put your PIN in that same wallet that I lifted. Then I'm just lucky. lol)

You guys must be bothered by the smallest things. I could care if someone asks for my ID. Although, I have C.I.D. on every card so they should ask me anyways.

I can see someone standing in line, freaking out, citing the visa tos like it's nobodys business lol

SIGNING THE CARD IS PART OF THE T.O.S.

YOU DON'T LIKE THE T.O.S. YOU AGREED TO WHEN YOU APPLIED AND ACTIVATED

THE CARD(s)...CLOSE THE ACCOUNT(s) AND USE PAPER CHECKS or CASH

They aren't void because I still use them on a daily basis.

VOID IF NOT SIGNED

AUTHORIZED SIGNATURE

NOT VALID UNLESS SIGNED

I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY CREDIT CARD COMPANY TELL ME TO PUT CID IN PLACE OF MY SIGNATURE

HAD THEY WANTED CID THERE...IT WOULD HAVE ALREADY BEEN PRINTED FOR ME

When you lose you card and it gets used and then eventually makes it back to the bank

THEY DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR FRAUD SINCE YOU NEVER SIGNED THE CREDIT CARD

Sign your card on the signature panel as soon as you receive it.

Some customers write “See ID†or “Ask for ID†in the signature panel, thinking

that this is a deterrent against fraud or forgery; that is, if their signature is not on

the card, a fraudster will not be able to forge it. In reality, criminals don’t take the

time to practice signatures: they use cards as quickly as possible after a theft and

prior to the accounts being blocked. They are actually counting on you not to look

at the back of the card and compare signatures—they may even have access to

counterfeit identification with a signature in their own handwriting.

“See ID†or “Ask for ID†is not a valid substitute for a signature.

But the thing is that when they take my card, if they end up looking at the back and they see CID, they usually ask for my ID. If I just had my sig on the back, that wouldnt do anything at all to benefit me.

Why does everyone want to stick their nose where it doesn’t belong? The agreement is not between you and the store. If you don’t like it just take your business elsewhere and quit crying about it. The other day I was asked for my ID. I gave the clerk a 3k Amex gift card. No name or place for a signature on the card. I handed her my ID. She then noticed it was a GC. I asked if that helped her. She apologized and said she was required to ask for an ID (2k purchase). I just smiled and said no big deal. I should of accused her of being part of the hate and bait club or is it the bait and hate club? I get the clubs mixed up around here!!!

I really do not see the “BIG DEAL†about a Cashier requesting an ID when a customer uses a credit card to make purchases.

Just yesterday while checking out of Wal-Mart the cashier requested my ID on a purchase.

Although, this may be good policy, I am not sure what training the cashier received in detecting phony ID’s and what if anything she/he could do about it.

Guess the next question would be to place my hand on the scanner to check my fingerprints.

Don’t you just love it……

The benifit of asking for ID on large purchases is to verify , to some degree, you are who you say you are. Will it deter fraud?? Maybe, even if the owner of the card gets reimbursed for the fraud, the CC company is not going to eat 100% of the loss, they will pass it down to the little guy, You and I, in the form of higher fees and lower limits. I see no problem showing ID. If a crap flowers bank, who will be nameless for now, asked for ID when an ID theif opened several bank accounts in my name, maybe they would have been stopped before they used my ID  But instead I know have hours of work ahead of me!

While George is technically correct - Visa/MC policy states a signature is all that is needed, and ID is not required, I fail to see the harm caused by verifying that the person that is trying to use the card is actually the person to whom the card is issued by seeing a picture ID (obviously it is not 100% foolproof).

So you show them your DL, and they see if the name matches the card, and that the picture matches the person handing them the card. What does this take, 15 seconds? I refuse to believe that anyone is sooooo important that 15 seconds out of their lives is going to make a huge difference. And if this prevents one fraudulent purchase on your card, which will take a heck of a lot longer than 15 seconds to clear up...why the complaining?

Furthermore, the notion that a cashier is going to steal your identity by looking at your DL is ridiculous. First, you are assuming the cashier is a thief, second that they can remember the info from a 15 second glance, and third, they are saavy enough to actual do something with it. If you live your life with that level of paranoia, I feel bad for you.
