why on earth would a store claim that it needs to check ID for these items? consumerist has a couple reports of a store making its own check ID policy. is the store staff looking to steal my ID??????

Yeah, that is correct. Supposedly because the propellant used is a preferred huffing agent of wayward teens.

I bought canned air this past weekend that said it contained "bittergent"...supposedly to make it unpleasant for huffing.

Let me add.....I typically don't get actually ID'ed for this stuff. I guess I don't look anywhere near 18....probably more like the grandpa that I am.

WD-40 rep said it does not use the type of propellent kids are looking for.

but is there a LAW REQUIRING CHECKING ID?

OR ARE SOME STORES SPECIAL?

Good point on the WD-40. And I am not sure about an actual law...although I have enough free time I am researching it.

I have a feeling this is a store policy. I find it interesting that some stores restrict sales of ALOT of things to anyone under 18. Several OTC medicines for example.

In re Controlled Susbtances Act:

The federal law has only five schedules, but some states have added a "Schedule VI" to cover certain substances which are not "drugs" in the conventional sense, but are nonetheless used, or abused, recreationally; these include toluene (found in many types of paint, especially spray paint) and similar inhalants such as amyl nitrite (or “poppers”), butyl nitrite, and nitrous oxide (found in many types of aerosol cans, though it is pharmacologically active, it is considered an inhalant). Many state and local governments enforce age limits on the sale of products containing these substances.

Perhaps under this aspect there may be a requirement for checking ID.....

The propellants sometimes are a chemical compound subject to abuse...

remember that some states even restrict the amount of pseudoephidrine that can be purchased in a month, and that limit actually precludes two boxes being bought in the same month in Texas (by a fraction of an ounce). The DL info is entered into a database. It is supposed to deter the meth cooks but wreaks havoc on allergy sufferers...

As to George's comments...Liquid Paper of today is not the same as it was years ago and is not a viable inhalant like the stuff sold when I was a kid.....

Almost any store I go into to purchase any sort of aerosol I get asked if I am 18...

Centex. as far as pseudopehdrine I believe that is a federal requirment now.

I remember way back in HS i used to work at a store. and the same guy came in everyday and bought 2 bottles of ephedra, and 2 boxes of Sudafed. (the daily limit 10 years ago) Now is behind bars for none other than meth lab.. What a surprise :good: :P

Shows how society has changed. When I was young, you could buy paregoric over the counter, by signing for it. In Canada you can buy OTC meds containing codeine.

But back to the topic here - Most of the products that are regulated in this manner are actually industrial chemicals that will injure people if not used properly so their use is confined to specific industries. Some of us never have a reason to purchase these products, because we would hire someone else to do the work that required the use of those chemicals.

Somewhere along the line, some kids discover a new way to get high using some chemical that's in ordinary household products in minute amounts, and then state legislatures add the chemicals involved to their own list of regulated chemicals. Some states just require proof of age, and others maintain a database of ID's of people who purchase the products. Eventually, if it's a big enough problem, pressure is put on congress or some interstate/federal regulating authority to control who has access to that chemical and products that contain it, to prevent people from purchasing the product in another state and bringing it back into the state with the problem.

Now, this is often a point where the issue becomes political (states control vs federal control), so I'd like to head that one off at the pass. Don't go there, please.

JUST A STATEMENT OF FACT...

You don't want to be asked for ID on a controlled substance (FEAR or NO FEAR)...just don't buy the stuff

Maybe we could just explain about the regulations, and let them decide for themselves. :)

I have no idea, but this is not a VISA/MC matter.
Some local ordiances do require RECORDING ID information for spray paint purchases made within the city limits.

"IF" it is a controlled substance and you don't want to show ID...don't buy it

YOU WOULD NEED TO SHOW ID FOR IT IF YOU WERE PAYING CASH

That's strange.

Maybe a misunderstanding on the employee's part?

I even asked the guy checking me out, he was an assistant manager whatever that means, and he said he had never heard of checking ID for canned air.
